Question Fluctuating liver enzymes

My liver enzyme tests (ALT/AST) have been fluctuating lately. Sometimes they are elevated and sometimes they are normal. My GI dr. called me today and said that he wanted to test me for hepatitis. Are fluctuating liver enzymes a symptom of hepatitis...or would they be permanently elevated??

Re: Fluctuating liver enzymes

They can go up and down. dh was diagnosed last year, and they went down gradually for 6 months or so, and then he started having the same symptons, couldn't eat much, food smelled bad, etc., and sure enough they went back up again. That is why we had to see a GI specialist today as a matter of fact. He is scheduled for a liver biopsy in early Aug now to see how much damage there is. Will be following nutritional therapy for now, due to being diabetic. We all have to hang in with this problem, it seems to take it's own sweet time to improve. But we spoke with others at the office, and they are recouping, even elderly folks are getting better slowly. Gives us hope anyway.

Re: Fluctuating liver enzymes

Elevated ALT and AST are indicators of liver problems that can be caused by hepatitis. An excess of protien in your diet can raise some liver panel tests. A better indicator is AFP levels. Increasing AFP will show if the liver is functioning properly
