Post Vitamins and Supplements

I've been reading thru some old posts here and doing some research on the net regarding vitamin and supplements for people with Hep C. I've found mny conflicting reports so I'd like to get some input/advice from the active members of this board.

I've been taking 10,000 to 20,000mg of Vitamin C daily. There's a post here where someone actually stated that anything above 1000mg for heppers could be damgerous. I've never read that anywhere else. Can anyone comment on that?

Milk Thistle seems to be the most promising. It's actually the only herbal supplement that my specialist suggested taking. This is coming from a physcian who initially laughed at me for inquiring about herbal supplements so I think that really says alot about Milk Thistle.

There's been many studies with promising results of people with Hep using Alpha Lipoic Acid (500mg/day).

I'm also taking SAM-e, Thymus, Vit E (1000 IU), Coral Calcium, A good multi-vitamin (without iron), Lecithin, zinc.

Any other suggestions?

Howdy again Samwise-
There has been a lot of discusion here time to time on supplements, most vitamins, other than say Vitamins like vitamin A that gets stored in the liver are passed though the body when you use the washroom, if your body does not need it, overuse of any supplement can lead to some problems.
20.000 mgs of vitamin C seems to be an rather large dose, your body will in this case disgard most of the unwanted overload, but I would speak to your doc on the ammount, I do not personally know if anything that states as you mentioned, on anything over an 1000 mgs of Vitamin C is dangerous for people with HCV.

I have read though that a person with HCV sould eliminate any Zinc supplements, as we get what we need from a reasonably heathy diet.

Be well +

Hello samwise,I am all for nartural healing .But 20,000mg.of vit.c is too much .Your daily intake should be between 4000- 5000mg.a day.I take rose hips capsules which is an excellant source of vit.c. A good holistic doctor should have never told you to take that much.I ,like you am a 1B.So I refuse treatment right now because I personally am terrified of the side effects with no proof I will be cured & stay cured. That is my personal opinion. So for right now I eat a very strick diet, take alot of supplements & exercise on a regular basis. The liver is the only organ that has ability to heal itself if given the right nutrients.I do beleive with the right nutrition & herbs & supplements our body can heal itself! I feel great ,have lots of energy as long as I stick to it.If I dont I get extremely tired & have no energy.I also got my alt's & ast's to a normal level & kept them there (for the last year & a 1/2)& my viral load is down to 600,000 (thousand).Alot of people in here dont beleive in what I am doing ,I do!Everyone has to do what is best for themselves.Good luck to you If I can help with anything else as far as natural healing,I will be more than happy to help! Stay positive !Cudagirl

cudagirl; I, too, am 1b.I could not tolerate the PegIntron side effects. I am taking 800mg milk thistle, 600mg lipoic acid, 1000mg vit e, 1000mg vit c.I will recheck liver panel next month. Do you think if alt, ast, ggt, bilirubin have dropped signicantly, that fibrosis has been halted? Another way to phrase it; given that biopsy shows a certain level of fibrosis and you are able to bring the liver panel numbers down well within normal range - is fibrosis halted?

Crybabytoo,I was told that your level of fibrosis can stay the same for the rest of your life .My level of fibrosis is a 1 ,which is mild .I was told that some people never get any worse,But some very well can. Each individual is different. My nurse said that if I take good care of myself that most likely I could very well remain a 1 for the rest of my life.I am 34 yrs.old.So I feel pretty confident with everything I am taking ,My strick diet& exercize ,I going to live a long healthy life.So you just keep filling your body with the right nutrients, a good diet(stay away from sugar, red meat, processed foods, alcohol, smoking, etc.)You will live a very long life too!Remember this is NOT a death sentence.More people die with hep c than from it.So stay positive & bring in the new year knowing some day you will conquer this dragon!Have a Happy New Year !
