Hi DebSue, my biopsy was similar as far as being done outpatient, going in early to the surgery center, having the IV tube in my hand. My recollection is that I was wheeled in to the O/R, the doctor gave me a local anesthestic in my side, then he did what felt like a quick thump on my right side -- that was him inserting the needle into the liver to get the tissue sample! It was over in a couple minutes!
They then told me to turn immediately on my right side, and that I might feel pain in my shoulder -- referred pain from the liver. And a few minutes later, I sure did. They wheeled me into recovery and told me to lie on my side for a half-hour, and if I needed any pain medication, to let them know. The pain in my shoulder/arm was pretty severe and I wasn't sure how long it would last, so I asked for the pain meds. I slept awhile and once I woke up and wasn't groggy, I was allowed to go....my mom had to drive me home. I wished I hadn't asked for the pain meds because it kept me groggy for the rest of the day, but other than that, it wasn't bad at all.
Hope that information helps. Good luck with yours!
