Hi all..while waiting this weeknd out and anticipating a long day tomorrow unti I get to the doctors appointment I have been wondering about something. How is the Liver Biopsy done? Any feedback greatly appreciated. Also..Is this the disease Naomi Judd has? Seems like I remembered this is what she is going thru and she looks wonderful. Thanks! DebSue

Hi DebSue
The biopsy is usually done as an out patient. I will tell you about mine, as there may be other way to do the biopsy.
I went to the hospital very early in the morning and they did quick blood work on me (to see what my blood was up to for that day). The also did the usual check in stuff like temp, blood pressure, etc. The nurse also put sometype of iv unit in my left hand. She said that they needed to do that in case they needed to inject drugs during the biopsy and afterwards.
I went into a room where they had machines and catscans. I layed on a table and there were 2 nurses and one specialist there with me. They all explained that they would take a couple of pictures in order to see exactly where my liver was. They did that. Then they inserted something (looked like very small tubing) into my chest. It didn't hurt at all. The whole time one of the nurses kept asking me how I was and how I was feeling. I was fine. At some point and time the specialist told me to hold really still and he was ready to get a sample of my liver. Then I got nervous, but it still didn't hurt. I only felt extreme pressure and a little burning sensation. The specialist asked me if it hurt and I told him that I only felt pressure and it felt like it was taking my breath away. He said one more time to hold as still as possible and I felt some more pressure where he was working. He then said, all done. He then instructed the nurse to put some sedative in my iv. She did that and then took me immediately to a room upstairs in the hospital. I layed there and rested. They let me go home about 3 hours later after doing some small test to make sure that the bleeding had stopped. It was a little scary but no pain. The anticipation was worse than the biopsy was.
You'll be fine. Just prepare yourself to rest for the remainder of the day. Don't lift or overwork yourself. The staff will tell you that also.
Good luck with your biopsy and your results!

Hi DebSue, my biopsy was similar as far as being done outpatient, going in early to the surgery center, having the IV tube in my hand. My recollection is that I was wheeled in to the O/R, the doctor gave me a local anesthestic in my side, then he did what felt like a quick thump on my right side -- that was him inserting the needle into the liver to get the tissue sample! It was over in a couple minutes!

They then told me to turn immediately on my right side, and that I might feel pain in my shoulder -- referred pain from the liver. And a few minutes later, I sure did. They wheeled me into recovery and told me to lie on my side for a half-hour, and if I needed any pain medication, to let them know. The pain in my shoulder/arm was pretty severe and I wasn't sure how long it would last, so I asked for the pain meds. I slept awhile and once I woke up and wasn't groggy, I was allowed to go....my mom had to drive me home. I wished I hadn't asked for the pain meds because it kept me groggy for the rest of the day, but other than that, it wasn't bad at all.

Hope that information helps. Good luck with yours!
