family donate liver to family member? - Hepatitis Message Board

I just found out that my brother may have liver cancer.. he also has Hep. C. Do you know if a family member can donate if blood & other matches meet the criteria? Has anyone ever heard of this being a possibility? Thank you-Lisa

It is possible to undergo a liver donor liver operation, but there is a long road from possible to doable. There is risk involved to the donor as well as the recipient, so transplant centers are very careful about this procedure.

Both patient and donor must go through a rigorous evaluation.

Has your brother been evaluated for a transplant? Have other strategies been tried yet? (like radio ablation therapy)

Thank you so much for replying so promptly to my post. I am glad I found this post, it makes me feel better to know people really do care.
My brother lives in Texas. He has not been evaluated yet, & no other treatment has been performed as yet. I will mention radio ablation therapy to him & see if he will run this past his doctor. I will let you know how it goes. Again, thank you so much, at least we can maybe follow up with the doctors on this. Lisa
