Well, here goes:
There are accuracies and inaccuracies here but, essentially, the counsellor is right. Hepatitis C can be spread through works and through used needles.
Exposure to the air is not the issue. It is the survival of the virus for a prolonged period of time (up to 14 days!) on a surface or inside a closed container (the injection tube OR the hollow needle)
Same is true for the tattooing machines. It isn't the just needle, it is the vacuum machine that delivers the ink that is the culprit.
Now, why would you be on a methadone program AND be actively injecting anyway? Isn't the point of the program to put down on the IV drug use? My BS meter went off the scale with that bit of information.
There are a lot of sincere and committed (to getting clean and sober) people on waiting lists for these programs. If you are trifling, please be honest and let someone else have a chance at the program. Better still, for your own sake, take this opportunity seriously and get well.
Now, having said that, if you mean injecting interferon drugs, erase my comments above. But, if you are, why is this an issue? You are supplied with all the sterile equipment you need and alcohol swabs and cotton balls are not expensive. Color me confused here.
best thoughts,
thanbey
