treatment causes thyroid, prostate problems! - Hepatitis Message Board

I got off taking pegintron and rebetol almost 2 months ago (geno 1a) I took it for 23 weeks the dr. had me stop due to low blood counts. Also bad sides. But the reason im psoting is that as a result of the combo treatment I have a damage thyroid gland and will have to take rx life. The second and worst side I devloped due to low WBC count is prostaitis (prostate infection)that is painful and I will suffer with for life. It got so bad that I couldn't urinate out of the tip of my penis, and have pelvic pain and etc. I realy regret taking the treatment and wish I could take it back,I just want to have hep c again with nothing else, I just want to be normal agin like I was!!but I have to move on, and I'm real scared of never having a relationship not only because of hepc but of the prostate thing and I'm scared i'm not going to be able to urinate on my own. I know that some benefit from treatment without permanent sides and thats wonderful. I just want to know if any one else has had thyroid problem as a result of treament or prosate problems.

Sorry to hear you have these problems.

I was curious to know if you drank a lot of water during treatment? I am thinking that if you didn't drink enough water then the concentrations of the drugs in your system could cause this sort of damage. I know of others who have treated with no side effects.

My feelings go out to you.

Try not to panic. I know it is hard when such pain is involved, but this may very well be a resolvable infection.

Thyroid problems are more common after interferon therapy. I have not heard of prostatitis due to interferon, but I have no reason to doubt you.

I hope this gets better very soon. Do what you need to do to get better. Please let us know what happens.

hello, dianasaska I did drink the tons of water, I think my body just had problems with the treatment with my low blood counts. My Dr and I were very optimistic when I started because my health other than hep c, was good and I'm 31 years old. I just responded diffrent. Most people I feel have less problems.

The Thyroid thing is very common from treatment. The damage to the prostate was a reaction due to my low immune system I also have problems with my eye gland so the interferon/rebetol damaged my glands
