Hi Docs,
This gastro is apparently not the nice guy type, but his information and opinions are not crazy. Most of the tests you discussed with him are indeed of limited or very uncertain value, and his desire to protect you from the added bother, risk (no procedure is 100 percent risk free, even if just the risk of error) and expense for tests he does not believe will affect your decisions or your health is a fair position. It's not your position, though, and you are the boss of your body, so he did eventually go along with you.
The cryo test is one I endorse, since it is a "side effect" of hep c that is potentially more damaging than the liver issues we all know about. So, if positive, it might affect your decision to treat.
There is no useful info from an ammonia test except in cases of established cirrhosis, at least as far as I know, and you seem far from that.
He is correct about tx cost more or less, although you have insurance so the whole amount won't be your worry. and he is about right about the 50/50, although we know its just a bit worse for 1a's. not far off, though.
So, not a sweetheart, but not a crazy guy either would be my reaction. I'd be more worried about the fact that he would not answer some of your questions than about the answers he did give. I favor docs who really will discuss stuff--there's so much to figure out. Hard to do alone.
That's my reading, anyway.
peace
sean
