Question Hep C 40 years Now......

I've had Hep C for 40 years and no real problems except now I sleep a alot. Recently had an ultra sound and recently my blood pressure has gone up. Doc says I have a Mild Cirrhosis. What does Mild Cirrhosis mean???? I don't drink or take drugs. Contracted Hep C years ago before they even had a name for it from a hospital. I've always taken a lot of detox herbs and nu-liver. Enzym 89 down from 200 a year ago. But I have noticed changes in my body, like sometimes tiny pin point bleed spots on skin, and my feet swelled twice (not gout) . so what or how far along in Cirrhosis when Doc says Mild Cirrhosis?

So, how did your doctor come to diagnose the cirrhosis? I think the only way to determine if you have cirrhosis is to have a liver biopsy. You can't diagnose cirrhosis with just an ultrasound When was the last time you had one?

As far as being tired and your high blood pressure this probably isn't related to the hep at all. I always say, "those of us with hepatitis always have something to blame symptoms on".

Re: Hep C 40 years Now......

There are four stages to untreated HCV. Fatty liver, fibrosis of the liver, cirrhosis and then liver cancer/failure. but there are many supplements you can take. to reduce your viral count and help counteract some of the symptoms.

needles to say you will need to everything you can to stay healthy, I didn't and the 48 week treatment failed. my viral count went from 2 million to 0 in one month but came back in the end. I don't know if I could have done anything to help or not. You do get used to the treatment but there are so many side effects. some of the side effects I experienced were quite severe but I never told my doctor because I didn't want to be taken off the treatment,(Kaiser) you can recover somewhat so do every thing you know you should. I quit smoking after 35 years, gave up alcohol, coffee, soda and sugary snacks. I no longer have a sweet tooth. it wasn't enough, everybody is different but don't take any chances.

Re: Hep C 40 years Now......

Hi Again,

Everything you put into your body goes thru your liver as it is a cleanser and if you are going to do anything while on treatments then it will not work. I have been diagnosed now for 18 years and over the years i have taken Milk Thistle in which my Doctor says was great and probably did slow down my Hep C. But, must now stop to let the drugs do its thing. I am four weeks on Treatment now and feel horrible but my Liver Enzymes have dropped frm 81 to 26 and that was in the first two weeks. I have also had 3 liver biopsies to determine the extent of the scar tissue or any signs of cirrhosis and that is the only way to find out . The Ultra sounds will show scar tissue and that only....Pls find another Doctor who can steer you in the right direction. Keep on going with this and donot give up

Cheryl

Hi Cheryl,In reply to your question, With all my tests i did, the liver transplant specilist told me I was in the 15- 20 % that was in the spontanious recovery! I thank God daily. My doctor now keeps a very close eye on my levels. I am currently putting a workshop/booklets together for Hep C so our community will be educated on Hep C/ HIV.We don't have a support system close by but I am putting my name and # in this booklet so if anyone needs to talk confidentially, I will help to the best of my ability. Thanks for your question! I pray for us all!

So, does this mean that if a person has Hep C, they probably have aids too? Someone my sister knows may have Hep C and is getting rechecked. I don't know much about it and by what I am reading, it sounds like the two go hand in hand, is that right? Thanks

Re: Hep C 40 years Now......

Hi again

I am sorry but I have never heard that HIV and Hep C run hand in hand. They are two different things with different treatments, the only comparrison is sharing of needles to catch the Disease. Hep C is curable if treated properly but HIV not so much. Google the two of them and u should find out all of the info on them. I have done alot of research on Hep C since I have been on my treatments and HIV has nothing to do with it.......Hope this helps...

Talk to u soon , Cheryl

Re: Hep C 40 years Now......

I know that means there is some damage to the liver. U may want to ask about starting treatment for the hep. to stop it from affecting the liver.

Re: Hep C 40 years Now......

Hi Kevinpet

I have just one question, why has your Doctor not told u to go on treatments.Any kind of Cirroshis is bad and he should not have let it get that far. I too have had Hep C for twenty years or more and am now four and a half months into my treatment. My enzymes have gone down to 11 and am showing negative for the Hep C virus. The treatments are not nice but compare it to the outcome I would do it anytime.....Once u get any kind of scar tissue it is getting bad , I had some but now it will more than likely be cured. Please look into the treatment for this , and u need to see a specialist and get it looked after. All of the things u said that are going on with u right now are all realated to your Hep C. Are u taking Milk Thistle??? if not pls get on it I took it for years and my Doctor even agrees with it. Pls take care

Cheryl

Re: Hep C 40 years Now......

Hello, I would love some advise from those of you who have dealth with this problem for sometime. I have had Hep C for quite a while but was told it was dormant. I recently had a surgury removing 2 feet of intestine. Now it is no longer dormant. I was told a normal count was 49 and mine is over 1, 149.000.00. How worried should I be. Because frankly I am scared to death. I have extreme tierd spells, night sweats, no appetite, weakness, and fear. Do any of you have any advise for me.
My family Dr. has referred me to a specialist but I am waiting for my appt.

Cool Re: Hep C 40 years Now......

Milk Thistle is an herb with an ingredient that seems to help liver functions, but there is no hard medical studies to show it works, herbal remedies are classified as food suplements and not regulated by medical standards. Each company that puts out milk thistle supplements makes their own and ingredients and potency can vary in each batch.
My doctor told me to avoid using milk thistle during treatment, as it can confuse medical people who are trying to interpret test results.
Interferon (i take pegalate interferon 2a)(Pegasis)is an anti-viral drug that attacks the Hepatitis C virus. I also take Ribavirin, which interferes with the reproduction cycle of the virus. The two drugs taken together have a much better sucess rate than interferon alone.
The only herb my medical provider told me I could take is Ginger to combat the nausea the medicine can cause.
