Understanding Hepatitis B and sex

hope someone has some advise on this.

my girlfriend is chronic with hep b. i was immunized with 3 shots some 15 years ago.

from what i understand this means the virus will be destroyed by the antibodies in my system. however, every time there's sexual contact and the virus enters my body, does this mean the antibody level will deplete as these are being used up in fighting the virus? if so does this mean there will come a point when i would have to replenish my antibody level with a booster shot in order for me not to become infected?

please help us understand this. we've read that booster shots are a matter of scientific debate, and once immunized boosters are no longer recommended. but we've also heard the contrary opinion. are there situations where the entire 3 shot dosage needs to be repeated later in adulthood?

or is infection through sex not an issue at all?

thanks folks.

I am going to give this a shot. I dont know to much about hepatitis but i will try. I would go back to the dr & have them check your antibody level for the hepatitis vaccine that u took 15 years ago. I believe u r due for another one. Be very careful wiht having sex with a partner that has it cause i know it can spread. I have a friend that passed it onto another person. So be careful. Please any one that can correct my info if im wrong please do. I would also like to know on info on this topic to.

Re: Understanding Hepatitis B and sex

congrats on getting immunized, I went through that 3 shot routine about the same time. Immunizationa work by giving your body a weak (live) or dead virus and your body makes antibodies. They used to think it would last for life. If you are exposed to the virus after immunization, your body 'recognizes' the virus and produces the correct antibodies. You might want to check and see if your antibodies are still active.
Here's the funny part. If you are never exposed to the virus, you antibody level can get so low you would have trouble fighting off an infection of the virus. But is you ARE exposed to the virus, your body reacts just like if you got a booster shot. Just check and make sure your girlfriend doesn't have a different virus (or different type of HepB).
A funny thing happened in the USA. All the kids that got immunized in the 60s and 70s never got exposed to the diseases they were immunized against,(if you immunize everyone, the disease disapears from the area) so now several 'childhood' shots are being readministered to high school/ college students because they never got a natural booster.
