Re: Understanding Hepatitis B and sex
congrats on getting immunized, I went through that 3 shot routine about the same time. Immunizationa work by giving your body a weak (live) or dead virus and your body makes antibodies. They used to think it would last for life. If you are exposed to the virus after immunization, your body 'recognizes' the virus and produces the correct antibodies. You might want to check and see if your antibodies are still active.
Here's the funny part. If you are never exposed to the virus, you antibody level can get so low you would have trouble fighting off an infection of the virus. But is you ARE exposed to the virus, your body reacts just like if you got a booster shot. Just check and make sure your girlfriend doesn't have a different virus (or different type of HepB).
A funny thing happened in the USA. All the kids that got immunized in the 60s and 70s never got exposed to the diseases they were immunized against,(if you immunize everyone, the disease disapears from the area) so now several 'childhood' shots are being readministered to high school/ college students because they never got a natural booster.
