Posttreatment Questions Re: Rebetron.

Hello all, Have just returned from some R&R and am having a few problems with mt health at present; am hoping that thaneby can help with these post treatment blues.
First week of post tratment went well, mentally I felt on top of it and had a little more energy than usual. Second week experienced a Gout attack that was more severe than any I'd had before, the duration of which, unlike others that last for between 24 to 48 hours, has gone on now for 3 weeks! I realise that if you're susseptible to Gout then the rebetron treatment can bring about an attack. Have had them off and on during treatment but have been able to get over them within a few days; not the case now.
Have been in touch with my GP and a little with my Liver Guy, they seem to think that I've just got to tuff it out. Am taking Indomythecin as an anti-inflammatory, and while most days it keeps it in check, it just won't go away! Any ideas?
Had Uric Acid test done and am well within nomal range.AST is 21, ref range 12-45. ALT tho is down around14, ref range 21-72. Hem. etc is on the way back up and energy level isn't bad, tho because of the Gout in Big Toe area, walking and biking have just about come to a standstill. Also severe Migrains have acompanied the Gout stuff; do you know of any relationship between the two?
Anyhow thanks for any info. you may be able to supply.
Regards Dragonslayer.

Re: Posttreatment Questions Re: Rebetron.

The patients that have talked to me about post treatment issues have generally found that life returns to normal in about as much time as you were on the treatment. One year treatment = one year recovery from treatment.

Ribaviron builds up the blood levels of medication and it takes a while even after you stop taking the medication to completely leave your system.

I am not a doctor and I hesitate to make guesses about the other problems. The migraines should be investigated based on some some studies showing brain complications from interferon treatment. One study is on the HCOP website under favorite links, then "articles for professionals." Has your doctor done a cat scan to check for vascular irregularities?

You could have had underlying or a pre-treatment condition (other than gout) that has been "activated" by the treatment. I don't know whether this could be true for the gout or not (maybe it isn't gout, after all).

One thing, insist your doctor thoroughly investigate what is going on with you. Ask for a neurological consult for the migraines if they are severe.

I hope this helps,

thanbey

Re: Posttreatment Questions Re: Rebetron.

Ouch! I can kinda relate! My husband has had gout attacks that last 3-4 weeks. We have tried all types of anti-inflammatories and nothing really works once it sets in.

He seems to have alot of luck with 100% Black Cherry Juice and the allpurinal(hey what's another combo treatment right?). You can buy it in the healthfood stores. Its not bad to taste and has the texture of prune juice. He drinks about a 4 cups a day during an attack and for maintenance about 4 cups a week. I have also heard that charcoal works too. He's not ready to try that but I saw it also in a health food store. The juice won't hurt you liver but I don't know much about the charcoal. I'll look into that. It may be worth a try and its a cheap treatment.

Glad to hear the good news on your levels!!! It's great to hear from folks who made it throught treatment. You give all of us hope. Stay positive and let us know how it goes.
