Advice Needed - Am I in Serious Trouble from Hep B?

Hey guys,

I'm hoping that someone can offer me some reassurance. I've been freaking out since last week. My girlfriend has been sick for a week, and thought she had the flu. After her urine turned dark, she went to the hospital and initial blood tests indicate hepatitis. Her liver is inflamed. She got the full test done on Thurs and we're waiting for the results on Tuesday. Her doctor is leaning towards type A, but I'm terrifed that it is type B, and I gave it to her.

We've been together for a year, and exactly a month ago, we had unprotected intercourse. We thought we were both std free at the time. Prior to this, I've received oral sex from her numerous times.

I've never had any symptoms, but one thing really worries me. In 2007, I had extensive blood work done in the hospital, and they told me my bilirubin levels were a bit high. I had blood work done again in 2010 and my doc mentioned that the bilirubin was up, but not significantly. I don't know if these tests could have checked for hepatitis, but it would be just my rotten luck that it was missed. I just read that with Hep B, high bilirubin means extensive liver damage!

My questions:

Does it sound likely that I have Hep B? The only risky behavior I've engaged is recieving oral sex. No drugs, no alcohol, no tatts.

Is it possible to have extensive liver damage and not have any symptoms?

Does the fact that my gf has major symptoms exactly one month after sex
pretty much indicate that I gave it to her? Or is it possible she could have picked this up months ago and now it is showing up?

Just feels like I'm totally screwed here. THe only bit of positivity is that I don't have symptoms, but now I feel like I could die very soon if my liver is that damaged.

Re: Advise Needed - Am I in Serious Trouble from Hep B?

Hi, usually with hep-b it has a incubation period of 8 -10 mo. till onset like the flu-type symptoms you're describing...(mine did).
You should have yourself checked to see if you have it for sure, as type-a is contagious and you have had contact.
Your doc could be right, as hep-a you can be exposed to from alot of sources, drinking or sharing containers, utensils, from just about anything that has been exposed to it.

With hep-b to be a carrier (infected & contagious) or get infected at all you would have to been exposed to it by blood, bodilly fluids (including sex), feces
I wouldn't worry till you get confirmed results, and if either of you don't have it ( type-b)... it wouldn't be a bad choice to get the vaccination anyway.

Stressing and worry, aren't very good either on the mind & body.

I survived Fulminant Hepatic Failure stage 4 coma w/multi organ failure from acute hep-b, with billi up to 78. Just wanted you to know I've had experience of this. That was in April through May of 94"

Hi Dave. I saw that you had CTPUN (cubit tunnel pinched ural nerve) syndrome and I was wondering if you ever recovered from it. My symptoms have just started about 40 days ago. Thanks. Mike
