Unhappy Needle stick injury

Today I had a needle stick injury at work. They did RAPID blood tests for HIV and Hepatitis. It came back negative, but I am worried that I have to wait to be sure. If my initial test was negative what are the odds of having hepatitis? How long do I have to wait ?

Re: Needle stick injury

First I would review the medical chart of the patient the needle came from if possible, as that may provide some reassurance. Hepatitis incubation can be as long as 6 months, so I think the hepatitis and HIV tests will probably be repeated at 3 and 6 months, but your medical facility should have a follow up protocol that specifies when they do repeat testing. I would just ask so you know what to expect. Chances are very low if the patient has no history of either.

The needle was from an unknown source as it was sticking out of the sharps container. Thank you for your reply!

Re: Needle stick injury

I am a Medical Assistant and the same thing happened to me after giving an injection. I told the Doc and she said I should not worry about it she said chances of me getting it was slim ! I refused to listen to her made her write me a script to take to the lab so I could get my blood drawn the same day which I did and was negative the lady that drew my labs told me to have it drawn again in 6 months I waited for 7 months and it was negative. By the way the man I had given the injection to did have Hep C ! Just have your labs drawn in 6 months to be sure...wishing you the best !!
