I am a 28-year-old female. When I was 9 months old, I was diagnosed with an inguinale hernia by my pediatrician. This hernia "disappeared" and did not come back for 20 years.
I did not know I had had a hernia until it came back when I was about 20 years old. I noticed this hernia was quite large. I had my hernia repaired in August 1995.
I would like to know if hernia repair is permanent or if it is going to come back some day.
It all depends oh how they repaired it etc. If they put mesh in it to help strengthen that particular area you may never have another problem but if you happen to strain that area again by doing heavy lifting wrong it can possibly cause a hernia again.
A hernia is the bulging of a portion of an organ through an abnormal opening so you see if the repair weakens you could have it occur again. My dad had his repaired twice and the second time they put in mesh and he hasn't had any further problems.
The surgeon did not put any mesh in. He just used some permanent stitches inside and some dissolvable stitches outside.
I am worried about straining the hernia's area by lifting something heavy the wrong way or by straining too hard when I go to the restroom because of my severe chronic constipation.
If you have constipation then that is something you need to get under control. Use metamucil 2-3 times daily for increased fiber and use a stool softener twice a day until the fiber therapy kicks in. Als drink prune juice or eat prunes reguarly. You should never strain on the toilet as this can lead to hemorrhoids and other problems. If after the third day you still haven't had a sufficient BM then use a glycerin suppository. As for your hernia reoccuring that is hard to say since I don't know your lifestyle nor what you do for work as well as your physical build. For the best info call your docs office tomorrow and ask to speak to the nurse and she can call you back with what the doc says.
I have had severe chronic constipation since I was a child. I also take medications that can cause or aggravate constipation. There is no way I can avoid taking these meds.
I have never tried Metamucil; I will look for this product in the pharmacy. I sometimes use Colace, which is a stool softener, but it is not effective for me. I will also follow the diet you described.
I have several hemorrhoids of various sizes.
I am not very active because the knee problems I have prevent me from being active. I am studying in a community college. I have a very thin build.
Unfortunately, I cannot call my surgeon; he is not in the U.S.; he is either in Tahiti or in France.
