I have herniated disc and sciatic pain running down both legs

I have herniated disc and sciatic pain running down both legs, I have been like this for a year now, it has affected everything i do, down to getting dishes out the oven.I had a epidural injection that didn't seem to help and I got a spinal headache from it, the worse headache I have ever had and been told if I have another injection I will most proberly get it again the only other opion is surgery but I dont want that. Will i ever get better?

To be blunt - if you've had the pain this long and ESI have not worked - surgery may be the best option for you. It comes down to quality of life - if you are in pain then there may be a solution in surgery. What is it that leads you to not want he surgery? If it's one disc only the surgery could be relatively minor.

Re: I have herniated disc and sciatic pain running down both legs

I have large herniation at bottom of spine, doctor showed me scan and where the nerve is squashed in between, it is only just recently that I have been getting sciatic pain down the other leg as well, so don't know why this is. I am nearly painfree when I take my Amitriptaline and dy codromal, so shall I just carry on with these, because when i stop the pain comes back about 2 days later.
I am scared of operation as I have heard so many horror stories and Doctor said one thing the operation may do is damage the nerve and I will have no feeling in my leg. Can you persuade me otherwise, many thanks.

If the pain is ongoing then surgery may be the right option. You can always get a second opinion if that helps and do some research on your doctor.

What specific type of surgery has the doctor recommended? There are a variety of surgical options. And what type of doctor is it (orthopedic spine surgeon? neurosurgeon?)

I'm a veteran of over 20 surgeries in my life (from spine, to gallbladder, etc) so I don't necessarily fear surgery if it will improve my quality of life and will maintain well being into the future.

Re: I have herniated disc and sciatic pain running down both legs

Deb, do indeed some research on what is offered for your problem. I was never offered the choice of surgery because they said my discs weren't that bad but my pain sure was to the point where my legs were giving out under me without warning! I was in the care of a Pain Specialist for two years and grew tired of it because we always had to find something else to manage pain. Eventually my body would adjust to the meds and it wouldn't work any more. When my doc offered me some patch to wear I tried it and I had the worse sweats ever and the darn thing never stayed on! I read the insert and found out how deadly it was to anyone who may step on it bare foot or roll on it in bed and would have to go on hunt for the darn thing every day not wanting to find my poor dog with her feet up in the air or my hubby cold! I took it back after calling the manufacturer who told me not to alter the patch in any way even to adhere it to my body. So when my doctor offered me yet another Pill I began to cry and asked if there was any other alternative that I can try other than more meds and she said,"NO." I found out from other patients about Accupunture and my doctor didn't believe in it but I told her I at least wanted to try. I went in twice a week and it was great but the cost became too great so I found out about the Tines Units (Electrical Stimuli) I loved it! From there there were other things like a tines unit that goes into the spine but doing that involved no anesthesia so I left that alone. In the end I fought for my surgery and won and glad I got it but not before doing my research on alternatives and the different types of surgical procedures and yes I researched my surgeon which I feel is so important that you feel comfortable and trust the man that holds your life in his hands. I feel that surgery is the only option when there is no other option and the quality of your life is to the point that it no longer has quality so only you can decide how much you can take and for how long. Best wishes.

Re: I have herniated disc and sciatic pain running down both legs

Thank you so much for your replies, I will certainly look into surgery. I am in fact laying on my bed right now, because of the pain and feel like an 80 year old woman and I am half that age!!!
