Does it sound like my hiatal hernia getting worse????

I was diagnosed about 10 years ago with hh, dr said surgery wasn't needed at that time. But the past 6-7 months, I wake up choking on saliva, burning in my throat, nausea, metallic tatse in mouth and abdomenal pain. Could all this be from my hernia or something else? thanks

Yes it sure could, but I'm not sure about the pain. I have a HH and gastritis, the gastritis causes upper abdominal pain and nausea. The other symptoms are from the hernia letting the acid from your stomach rise up. Are you taking anything? Something that might help is to put a couple of bricks under the head of your bed.

Re: Does it sound like my hiatal hernia getting worse????

Along with all the other stuff I'm experiencing 7 months post cholecystectomy, for the past 10 days, give or take, I have had those same burns & pains. It's also why I logged on @ almost 4am to find answers, so you can imagine how 'happy' I am to see there's already a post... Not happy that someone else is experiencing, just that it's less work for me while I'm exhausted & in pain, but I digress.

I also have a hh that was diagnosed in March & I was told the same thing; it isn't serious enough to do so anything other than treat it with meds. Approximately 10 days ago is when the heartburn started & I cannot come up w/1 thing I've changed to cause this. Then, tonight, as I'm "laying" in bed (it's more like my upper body is propped up @ a 45 degree angle against the headboard) it just keeps getting worse. It's even more painful in my back, right upper quadrant under my ribs where the gallbladder pain was & now on the left upper quadrant area where some of the pain is migrating. I also have a constant "acid burn" feeling in my mouth & my skin almost feels like it's been coated with a thin layer of Vick's Vapor rub or Mantholatum. And for the record, I do realize how crazy it sounds, but that's what it feels like.

Could this be my HH? If so, does that mean it's getting so bad that it needs to be surgically repaired?

Also, as w/many people who experiance this post choly "crap" I've been having a hard time finding a dr who will take me seriously, much less actually DO anything. Could the heartburn related to the whole choly mess & if so, the fact that it's causing the pain to increase in those areas, would that go to help my credibility any? (I hope that made sense)

Thx

Re: Does it sound like my hiatal hernia getting worse????

Hi, I had gall bladder surgery 12 years ago, all that time I thought the pain was from gall stones since my doc told me I had over 100 of them, I was relieved when they took my gall bladder out, but within months I still had all the same pains and the doc figured I had acid reflux then I finally saw another doctor who did a barium type thing and said it was a hernia. It sometimes starts out like a bubble blocking my abdomen then I can feel moving downword then back up, nausea, sometimes vomiting and sweating, then once the pain is gone, I feel blah the rest of the day, not really hurting anymore just sick feeling. These other syptoms I"ve been having has come up recently. My doctor I have now said it sounds like it could be getting worse, but still hasn't done anything for it. My antacids tend to work if I take it as soon as I feel an attack coming on. Hopefully someone will read your post and answer your questions. I do hope you feel better and find out what is causing your pain.

Re: Does it sound like my hiatal hernia getting worse????

I take Nexium for mine, it does the trick. My HH is very small apparantly, it was diagnosed by endoscopy. The symptoms that got me to the GI in the first place was the awful pain in my abdomen along with burping etc. The gastritis was the cause of the pain, it won't show up on any scan etc. The endoscopy is the best way to diagnose that, the Doc takes biopsies and get's a good luck at the lining of the stomach and esophogus. It's really worth a trip to your Doc. Nexium is so much better than over the counter antacids. Please be aware that left untreated gastritis puts you at higher risk of developing stomach cancer. I have endoscopies every 21/2 years to keep an eye on it.

Re: Does it sound like my hiatal hernia getting worse????

Thanks, and I'm sorry you're going thru the 'mess' you're going thru as well. I'll tell you, as someone who used to an EMT & worked on ambulances & in ER's this whole thing has opened my eyes to a side of the medical "industry" I never knew existed, hence the use of the word "mess".

Last night after I posted this I did a search for "natural remedies for heartburn" & it seems like apple cider vinegar is an overwhelming favorite. Most of the stories I read sounded pretty severe, and then I remembered my father used this about 4 months ago & he has TERRIBLE GERDs. In fact, it kind of sounds like what you're describing, and he also has a HH. After a lot of tests & unneccesary waiting, his dr gives him a Prev pac from now on when it flairs up. I'm not a dr, so I don't know if that's what you need, but it wouldn't hurt to ask. If I'm not mistaken, the Prevpac is a combo of Prevacid & an antibiotic.

I hope that helps & you start to feel better soon.
