Re: how long does it take for a large herniated disc (L4/L5) in the back to heal

Yes, the leg raise is the standard test................I have improved tremendously with that given tons of stretching.........I am fine standing or walking............just have discomfort after sitting in a chair for some time.

I know my disc is still pressing on my nerve but every day a little better.

Have you heard that discs resorb over time (actually get smaller with conservative treatment). Look it up. Appears to be a fact.

Off to the gym.

Best,

JJ

Hi, no I did not know that they can reabsorb over time. It does sound like you are better than the condition that I was in 6 months later. My PT was very aggressive and I was faithfull with the home stretches also, my herniation was just too severe. I had to quit my job of 6 years, and still couldn't stand for 5 minutes or walk without a limp after 6 months. It sounds like you are getting better.

Jjunda - I just came back and saw your status - excellent! I kind of figured you would get better - when you said you are able to get by with just ibuprofen, I thought you are probably going to get it under control. Yes the discs absorb and that is why lots of people wait long, because even with the herniations with fragments - if you can wait long enough those can also dissipate and stop bothering people. For a person like the other poster - who tried everything and it wasn't working then surgery is something to consider. I feel you are responding to the conservative therapy and although you might find yourself going through a couple bouts of this in the future you now have the tools and knowledge about how to protect this part of your back. There is a back board where people with lumbar problems hang out and you will find a mixed bag of good and bad results - so if you can go conservative therapy that is great!!! I am also glad to hear kasey443 had a wonderful outcome.

Re: how long does it take for a large herniated disc (L4/L5) in the back to heal

Thank You. Being an athlete my entire life who played college football, this injury is the most painful and frustrating I have ever experienced. While I am not cured, I do have the pain level down to a tolerable level but only because I stretch and do exercises relgiously every day in addition to using an inversion table.

While its been 5 months, I guess it will be another 4- months or so until I can resume normal activities without major fear of reinjuring myself.

THanks for your post.

JJ

Re: how long does it take for a large herniated disc (L4/L5) in the back to heal

To all,

I am suffering from a herniated disc (l4/l5) which is approximately 4mm large since October 2009 (which got real bad 1st week of Dec). However, I am completely off of pain meds and do my stretching and physical therapy daily and swim 2x/week. My leg raises 60 degrees without pain and i am able to function daily (walk fine).

I thought I was making progress but went to a specialist today in NYC (over 5,000 proecedures) and while I passed all of his strength tests and he confirmed I have no nerve damage he informed me I should have a mircodisectomy to alleviate my sciatica and ability to play basketball and golf going forward.

Any thoughts out there? Should I or shouldn't I have the procedure.

Much appreciated!

Why didn't he told you about minimally-invasive spine surgery?

If you plan to play sports again, avoid micro-discectomy.

I thought lumbar microdisectomy is minimally invasive.

That is the reason he suggested it i thought.

Sounds like you have been through a lot. What advice do you have?

Curious in others thoughts

Yes, some surgeons like to say micro-discectomy is minimally-invasive procedure. But thats not true.

My advice is that you investigate MISS.

Re: how long does it take for a large herniated disc (L4/L5) in the back to heal

I appreciate your thoughts. Here is what I found:

A minimally invasive procedure is any procedure (surgical or otherwise) that is less invasive than open surgery used for the same purpose. A minimally invasive procedure typically involves use of laparoscopic devices and remote-control manipulation of instruments with indirect observation of the surgical field through an endoscope or similar device, and are carried out through the skin or through a body cavity or anatomical opening. This may result in shorter hospital stays, or allow outpatient treatment

That is good observation of MISS. I also need to note:
-success rate is around the same percentage
-long-term success rate also
-FBSS syndrome is only 5%

Re: how long does it take for a large herniated disc (L4/L5) in the back to heal

I continue to make strides in my recovery from a 4mm herniated disc which occurred in Oct 2009 and was at its worst early December. I believe the key for me has been daily stretching, PT (back strenthening exercises including planks and lots of core exercises/massage, DIET (avoid all sweets including soda). While I am at approximately 70% or so, I feel in the next two months I will be able to resume normal activitites. I have been off all pain meds for the past 5 weeks (including Advil).

Lots of work but it has allowed me to avoid surgery so far.

Best of luck to everyone suffering from Herniated discs.

Keep fighting!
