Reherniation of a lumbar disc- anyone have this?

I just found by MRI that I have reherniated my L4/5 disc. I had this fixed with a laminectomy 7 years ago, and just found it had reherniated. I was wondering if this had happened to anyone else and if it can be repaired with another lami without having fusion. I'm not excited about being fused, and with rather go with ADR if need be. Just wondering if anyone has had this and got off without being fused.

Hi. Yes indeed, it is possible to reherniate that disc after a laminectomy. In fact, it happened to me 2 days after the lst lami but it took my doc 6 weeks to agree that my pain was worse than it should be after surgery. Another MRI showed another herniation. I did have a 2nd lami; however, it ended badly, as the disc continued to cause pain. Went to another doctor who ordered a ct scan and said I needed a fusion. I agreed as I knew the pain was way beyond being fixed any other way.

Before getting a 2nd lami, I urge you to get a second opinion if the dr wants to do anothr lami. You should get a second opinion no matter what your surgeon suggests be done when it comes to surgery.

Good luck, hope this helps and that you will stay in touch.

Re: Reherniation of a lumbar disc- anyone have this?

I've had it happen twice. I went 5 years after my first surgery without a problem, and only 2 months from my second surgery before it herniated again. It seems that the disc is weakened from the injury and surgery. I am getting ready to have a fusion, but I have other problems as well (spondylolisthesis, arthritis, severe degeneration, stenosis).

My surgeon recommends fusion the third time around if it's the same disc.

This is my 2nd herniation on this disc, and I'm seeing the surgeon that did the original one. If he says fusion, I'm going to say "no thank you, ADR please."
