Clonus(shaking) and leg weakness from Herniated Cervical Discs?

I'm 46 year old male. I've been athletic my entire life. When I was 22, I had a rupture of t/11-12 disc and had emergency Laminectomy. I experienced paralysis and severe clonus(shaking of left leg). Surgery was successful..I've lived normal active life, even playing Ice hockey for the last 10 years. 6 years ago, I had neck pain and loss of use of left arm. Diagnosed with herniated c-6 disc.
With conservative treatment, pain went away and strength returned.
Now, I've been experiencing return of clonus and associated weakness/spasticity of left leg. Mostly in my thigh area. Constantly tripping on my left leg while walking. Little strength or control when walking.
Dr.s want to perform c 4/5 and 5/6 anterior discectomy. No one seems to be certain that leg weakness and clonus is coming from my neck problems. I'm wondering what is chance that this due old injury @ t 11/12 which has been pain free and shows slight "angulation" on MRI, but no severe compression on spine as there IS @ Cervical levels...

I am 2 weeks (11/19) away from surgery. I'm going to L.A. for a 3rd opinion to see if there is definite need for this surgery and to see if there is a way to determine if the leg weakness is coming from neck or other location.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Steve

Steve -glad you had success. Mine C-5/6, C-6/7 7 years ago went well. Now anticipating schedule Dec. surgery for C-4. Same symptoms as before, MRI verifies problem. Now, did anyone suggest your "clonus" might be Parkinson's? Just a thought. Mine's been diagnosed since '98, and I'm hoping as a side effect/result ofthe surgery thatsome of the "tremors" might be lessened. Never know. Lory

So far so good. Two weeks since surgery and my leg is feeling stronger, shaking is diminishing, neck pain is minimal. I have a happy spine. I couldn't be more thrilled. Glad I had donor bone. Dr. is requiring I stay in collar for 6 weeks, otherwise you'd never know I'd been through surgery.

Hi I too have a 4 week old problem because of rupture of C5/C6 disc. Some docters say that surgery is the only answer. Any suggestions post your surgery.

Re: Clonus(shaking) and leg weakness from Herniated Cervical Discs?

Hi, Its my first time to write on here, but I have enjoyed reading the messages. I wish I could of found this yrs ago! I had cervical disk surgury in July2001 had plate and all hardward stuff for 4-5-5-6/ -with bulging at 2-3 3-4 , and will have to be fixed thru the back of neck if they start acting up.I have since had rotor cuff repair. Have Fms and need knee replacement. Needless to say makes me feel almost normal to read all these messages. I am in chronic pain 24-7 but am taking lortabs to ease some of it. I have acute neck spasms and shoulder pain since my surgery. I also have termors in right hand and fingers shake? I was just wonering if anyome else has had this after surgery? The dr. says it is nerve damage that I wont get back. I also drop things constantly and weakness in both arms/hands. I have applied for ss but havent head anything yet. Thanks I would like to hear for some of u guys!
