post op inguinal hernia issues
I had a left inguinal hernia diagnosed (by clinical exam) about 4 months ago; I had been having intermittent pain for a few months but no buldge. After the diagnosis I had no more pain for 5-6 weeks and then about 1 week of minimal discomfort (it did not stop me from running 5 miles/day and all other normal activity). The pain then vanished again but the surgeon assured me that I had a hernia and should repair it before it got bigger. I trusted this doc and so scheduled it especially after he said I'd be back to all my normal activities in a few days to a week. I specifically asked him about running (as that's a very important part of my life) and he told me about one of his patients who ran a marathon the day after a hernia repair (he said to my disbelief that he probably was in pain but that the surgeon had no worries about the repair not holding up...mesh repair, open surgery). I was led to believe that I'd be back to my running in about a week at the longest.
Well, I had the surgery 8 days ago (open repair with mesh) and although I was pretty good the 1st 2-3 days (only took a few advil) I did have a lot of swelling and bruising. But the last 2-3 days I'm doing worse and have several concerns. First there is a firm, tender, sausage-shaped mass under but separate from the incision. It's very uncomfortable and wakes me up with pain at night despite now taking the vicodin I was prescribed which I hadn't needed before. The bruising is less but still sisnificant. There is still generalized pain and tenderness around the entire area. I have gone for a few walks but there's now way I could run at this point. Is this "normal" (especially the sausage-shaped lump) and if so when can I expect things to improve? Maybe I was naive believing the surgeon. I'd appreciate any thoughts. (I've read some of the other posts on this board but none specifically talk about this lump/mass.)
