I'm really scared because I think I have a hernia

I did leg presses at the gym last Tuesday. I pushed myself and did more than I ever have, but it didn't seem that hard.

However around Thursday, I started feeling a little strain on my right abdomen above the belly button, but below my right nipple. I didn't think much of it since I've had it before and it usually goes away in a few days.

But now I'm really worried because it's Sunday night and I still kind of feel it. I always thought that if you have a hernia, it was completely painful and you couldn't do anything. But I've been working and doing stuff all day without even giving it any thought. It wasn't until I bent over to look at something and put all my weight on the right that I was reminded that I'm still "sore."

So I looked it up and I think I fit all the symptoms for "reducible hernia." I checked the spot where it "hurts" and I think I feel a lump. I'm not sure if it's actually a lump or if I'm just being a hypochondriac, but it "goes away" when I sit which is like a clear cut sign of a hernia. But again, I'm not sure if I'm feeling a lump or just a normal part of my body. Unfortunately I'm really overweight so if theres a lump, I can't see it because it's at my fattest part. The part that scares me the most is that hernia's don't even really hurt that much.

I have a doctor's appointment on August 30th, but I'm really scared that this is really happening. I've never had any type of surgery and I'm already swamped in medical bills.

Does this sound like a hernia to you guys?

Re: I'm really scared because I think I have a hernia

So I found a similar feeling "lump" on the left side of my abdomen. It's not in the same exact spot, but it's pretty nearby. I feel absolutely no strain on that side, so maybe I'm just being a hypochondriac? Ugh

Re: I'm really scared because I think I have a hernia

It's somewhat unusual for a hernia to happen that high up. In men, it usually happens closer to the groin.

Keep an eye on it, see if it gets bigger. Don't keep poking at it, though, just look in the mirror if you happen to remember.

Re: I'm really scared because I think I have a hernia

There are many different types of hernias. "Reducible," as far as I know doesn't refer to an anatomical location but more to the nature of the hernia and how it behaves.

Inguinal hernias are the most common in men (I've had 3) and occur in the lower abdominal wall. Yours is too high for that. There are other hernias that can occur higher in the abdomen and the diaphram. Sorry, I don't have any experience with those. If you're not having significant pain and it doesn't appear to be getting worse, I would let it go for awhile and just keep an eye on it. It could be just a strain. If it persists for weeks, you should probably have it checked.

Re: I'm really scared because I think I have a hernia

So I may have been paranoid about it being that high up. I found the same "lump" on my left side. It's not in the exact spot, but its pretty nearby.

However, I still feel some "discomfort" around my waist area. It's in a bunch of different spots, almost random. I feel it the most when I bend down into a squat position. Sometimes I feel it higher up, sometimes lower down, sometimes more towards the center.

I also have trouble pooping, but I'm not sure if thats because of that, or because I've been eating like crap. I've had to cook for myself this past week, so I've been eating a lot of pasta, rice, and bread. Almost no meat really. Not sure if thats related.

I guess I do feel a bit bloated. Almost gassy and like I need to poop but I've tried twice already.

Okay, that doesn't sound like hernia pain. Sounds more like constipation cramps, as those do move all over the abdomen.

Try some whole fruits, some veggies and some whole grain products, rather than ones with white starch.

Re: I'm really scared because I think I have a hernia

yeah, thats what im thinking. However the only thing that scares me is that if I bend over or squat or something like that, i do feel some slight discomfort that almost winds me. Sometimes it'll randomly pop up while I'm sitting. If it werent for that specific thing, I'd say yeah its just discomfort from crap diet. I can't find a lump anywhere either, but that may be because I'm really overweight. (which is why i was working out and might have gotten it in the first place)

If I'm in a certain position and I cough or take a deep breath, I feel a weird sensation in my abdomen. Which makes me think thats the hernia. But I can't really find it because its covered up by my fat stomach

Re: I'm really scared because I think I have a hernia

After thinking it over more, I think it's definitely a hernia, I just can't find the lump because I'm really overweight.

It's affects my whole digestive system. My stomach hurts a tiny bit. Not so much that it ruins my day, but enough so I know something is wrong. I feel like I almost always have to poop even though I just did. I randomly burp and fart a little more often. Some heartburn/acid reflux too.

It's been going on for almost a week now. So either it was caused by my trip to the gym last tuesday, or my poor diet for 2 weeks.

Re: I'm really scared because I think I have a hernia

It's hard to tell for sure... so you may just want to run it by your doctor just so you don't have to worry about it. I had two inguinal hernias that I didn't even know about for many years. My surgeon actually thinks I was born with them! They were symmetrical, so really not noticeable with not being large. I just thought it was some kind of fatty tissue. They also didn't hurt at all, but I noticed that the small lumps would flatten when laying down (reducible). One day when working out, I felt a weird pull and a pain in that area. Then I noticed one side looked larger than the other. That's when the idea of a hernia came to mind. They were ALWAYS reducible and never stuck, and they were uncomfortable, but the pain was never bad at all. I was fairly positive they were hernias after reading about them and saw a surgeon for a consultation. They confirmed it immediately just by feeling them and I had surgery to correct them. It all happened pretty quickly, even though they were not at that dangerous stage (not strangulated and stayed reducible - just didn't want to risk that).

It can be really hard to tell, and certain locations of hernias make it even more difficult. I'm not as knowledgeable about those further up the body since I haven't had that kind, but you might even be able to ask a general doctor what they think. If there is a concern, they can let you know so you can see a specialist. Hopefully that isn't the case! I do have to say though, surgery wasn't as bad as I thought. I read about others' experiences, took some time off work to heal, and was careful to always roll out of bed and never sit up. Learning about what others' recommended here on Healthboards was a huge help! Let's hope you don't even have to worry about that at all though

Re: I'm really scared because I think I have a hernia

I went to the doctor and he didn't find a hernia, he said what I have could be kidney stones or gall stones or even a problem with my liver, so I'm getting a sonogram. I have a feeling they're going to find a tumor though.
