Hiatal hernias are very common. Unlike other types of hernias, they don't necessarily require surgical treatment unless they produce troublesome symptoms.
The inflammation is most probably a sign of heartburn or acid damage, which may be the result of the hernia. Malignancy is pretty unlikely, especially since he doesn't have symptoms such as trouble swallowing.
Get the scope, but don't worry. I really doubt anything serious will be found.
