Hernia mesh failure and coughing blood

My boyfriend had intestinal hernia surgery about six months ago. He thinks he might have damaged the mesh. He is in severe pain, always feels like he has to urinate, and now coughing up blood. I am trying to convince him to go to the hospital instead of work. Can anyone say how serious his situation is? He felt some pain 4 days ago and then lifted some heavy stuff 2 days ago and has been in a lot of pain and wanting to urinate constantly. Today the coughing up blood started. Please help me convince him not to wait a week to go to the doctor.

Never play around with coughing up blood. That is never a good sign. He needs to call in to get an appointment ASAP... Probably should go to the ER imo... That can be seriously life threatening.

Re: Hernia mesh failure and coughing blood

I agree he needs to be seen immediately. The mesh if it tore loose could be puncturing the bladder, or he may have a urinary infection. Coughing up blood can be a sign of pulmonary emboli (blood clots in the lungs), which can occur following surgery. Neither of these things should be occuring, so he has to get checked out either by his surgeon or in an ER without delay.
