Cold Sore that does not go away, Can it last 6 weeks?

I got my 1st cold sore in my life (I'm 39yo) in early November. Went to
the doctor, he said it was HSV-1 and he gave me Zovirax. The tests were
negative though. Used the Zorivax and helped reduce the swelling but
would not completely heal the bump. I got 2 in the center of my upper
lip, 1 went away completely, but the other keeps swelling up. Went back
to the DR., he now prescribed Valtrex. Took Valtrex for a week and it
almost healed the bump. After a few days the bump started swelling again.
Called up the pharmacy and got a refill. Took it for another week, but
the bump does not go away completely and keeps popping up. It's the
size of a pimple, it have never blistered, it just swells and turns red.

I also started noticing that my tongue get a bit irritated at the tip
when the bump on my lip swells. Can you get H on the tongue?

I've been taking Garlic pills and a load of multivitiamins. I did try
Garlic Oil and did not see any added healing. I used the oil from
a 1500mg Garlic gel-cap.

What else can I do to make this bump go away?

Re: Cold Sore that does not go away, Can it last 6 weeks?

Hi there sorry to read about this. I too get cold sores on my lip area. I had one outbreak that was real bad. The doc put me on one med and it did not work then he put me on an other and it did not work then he prescribed Valtrex. I had to take 500mg of valtrex 4 times a day for 2 days before I noticedd a real change. Then we went to 500mg 2 times a day for a week then I went to taking 500mg once a day for 6months. That did the trick for me. I did not have an other cold sore for 3 years after doing that. (prior to that I would have one small coldsore a month) Talk to your doc about upping the amount of times you take valtrex. Please do not start taking more without talking to your doc.

Did you have any kind of a test to confirm that this was herpes, or just a visual diagnosis? If it was just a visual, you might want to get another opinion, or insist on a test.

Thanks for the replies, I going back to the Doc on Sat. Valtrex does seem
to help and will talk to him about upping the dose.

I had a test, but it showed negative for HSV1/2. What else could it
be? My lips do itch when the bump turns red. I'm worried about
it spreading to other part of my lip. I'm constatnly washing my hands
now.

Good for you! Negative results! Could be a bacterial infection, and probably lots of other things. I would go to a dermatologist if you can.
