I used to have one or two a year. Now I have almost one a month. I don't know what happened to change it; I'm generally healthy, eat well, don't smoke, etc. Seems to be hormonal with me, always around my period or ovulation. Others have said they follow the so-called normal pattern of fewer ob's as time goes by.
I was diagnosed last July and am currently having about one outbreak a month
Does it lessen as you get older or not? Will Valtrex taken preventatively really help? How many outbreaks do you all have per year on average?
Thanks for your input
I know some here are going to disagree with me here, but it would be wise to take Valtrex suppressively for the first year (according to a well-reknowned Herpes expert). Valtrex (derivative of Acyclovir) has a very good safety profile, it has been shown that people have taken it for over 10 years without any serious side effects. The first year is the toughest, and generally filled with the most outbreaks (they are supposed to lessen over time though this isn't true for everyone). So...if you can, I would definitely consider taking Valtrex suppressively. I think the dosage is 500 mg a day (1 pill). Good luck.
