Herpetic Keratitis -- Ouch! need help

About 4 weeks ago, I was diagnosed with a herpetic keratitis (corneal ulcer)on my left eye. I've had HSV 2 for over 20 years and have never taken any suppressant drugs. For the most part have used L-Lysine and other natural remedies with good success. But this has been stubborn. I have been using the eye drops (Viroptic) the doctor prescribed for 4 weeks without a great deal of improvement. He wants me to go to an MD and get on Acylovir. Has anyone else had any experience with this problem? It is very painful and quite wearing on one to have it go on so long.

TIA

Re: Herpetic Keratitis -- Ouch! need help

Hi Alex,

According to my eye doctor it can be caused by either type 1 or type 2.

The herpes virus lies dormant in the nerve ganglia. It can reside in the sacral ganglia where it manifests as genital herpes when active or in the trigeminal nerve ganglion which has nerve branches to the mouth and eyes resulting in outbreaks around the mouth, or as in my case, in the eye.

A healthy immune system can keep the virus dormant, but stress and too much UV ray-exposure can activate it. I have been under a lot of stress lately and also was out in the sunlight without sunglasses a full day before this occurred. I have just recently learned some of these things (i.e. about the trigeminal nerve and about sun exposure) so I am learning the hard way.

So does your doctor think that it just spotaneously appeared in your eye (because you have had outbreaks in other places before)... or do you/your doctor believe that there was some sort of cross-comtamination from another part of your body?

We are pretty sure it just spontaneously appeared as I did not have an active outbreak anywhere else at the time.

In addition to having some recent personal (not physical) stresses, my husband and I had completed a 13-mile hike the day before, out in the sun all day with the wind blowing and the pollen count was high, too.

I feel this is what triggered it.

Re: Herpetic Keratitis -- Ouch! need help

I have been also diagnosed with this, same info, it's cause by HSV1 that hangs out in that nerve, and when activated can head towards the mouth or eye. I have been on Valtrex suppressive therapy (500mg once a day) for five years with good results. During that whole time, I have only had four outbreaks of HSV1 (2-mouth; 2-eyes). Similarly, I only have 0-1 outbreak a year of HSV2. My doctor said suppressive therapy was a good idea because of the high number of outbreaks of HSV2 and said it would provide some protection against HSV1. The eye outbreaks lasted only 1-2 days, compared to a week before I started the medicine, so we are both happy with the result. I also get seen by an eye specialist who takes pictures every year so we can compare them and see if there is any build up of damage to my cornea. It's looked the same for the last five years!

Re: Herpetic Keratitis -- Ouch! need help

Thanks for this information, Sarah. I am going to the health clinic tomorrow to see if I can get the Acyclovir. Hopefully it will work as well as the Valtrex. We cannot afford insurance or prescriptions. Acyclovir is under our health clinic's plan, so will not cost me or maybe only a minimal charge. Four weeks is way too long to suffer with this IMO. Thanks again.

Bumping up this info on ocular herpes. After an extensive search I also found one person who said her son had it since he was a baby, and that he had light sensitivity near the time of ob's.

Re: Herpetic Keratitis -- Ouch! need help

Dear backpacker,

Question? What is ob's? Thank you. I am sorry to hear your friends son having this all his life. How old is he now and how is his vision?

Interesting that you bumped this up at this time because my eye just started hurting again.

My first occurence was in March '04 and did not stop hurting until just after we were hit with Hurricane Charley last August. My job involves much sitting at the computer, and we were without power for 2 weeks. My eye cleared up almost immediately when I was not sitting in front of the computer. As soon as we got power and I got back to working on the computer it started hurting again. A friend suggested a full-spectrum light bulb over my work desk and that has helped tremendously. The other day I decided to take a long sunbath (without sunglasses) after the Christmas madness and it started hurting again the next day. I mention all this in hopes of helping someone else with similar problems and always open to new and better ideas myself.

Re: Herpetic Keratitis -- Ouch! need help

Good to hear from you, spondylo. I'm sorry you've had such a hard time with the keratitis. I bumped up this thread because someone new to the boards was worried that some eye pain was herpes. I think it's difficult for most people, especially those new to herpes, not to worry about getting it in their eyes. It's good to hear from people like you, who are dealing with it, and who can tell what the real symptoms are.

ob's is just an abbreviation for outbreaks.

I don't personally know the lady with the baby who has ocular herpes; I just found her posts when searching through the boards for information, and thought her comments about light sensitivity would help. Your suggestion about the full-spectrum bulb is a great one!

I hope you feel better soon.

Re: Herpetic Keratitis -- Ouch! need help

I thought that I had herpes in the eye and I went to 2 different eye doctors and the both told me that I did not definatley did not have it cause it would be no question about it, I would be in tremondous pain abd so forth. but yes you are right I think that every one worries about that in the beginning. Sorry to hear that you acutally have it but it's not the end of the world and your positive attitude definately helps you not to be stredded out about it.

Re: Herpetic Keratitis -- Ouch! need help

I just found out that I have genital herpes after dealing with this for 15 yrs. The doctors keep telling me no you do not have it your culture test was negative.

Well anyway I believe I also have herpes in both my eyes. My vision keeps getting worse to the point I can not see small print without my glasses. I am only 38 yrs old. When I saw the eye specialist almost 2 yrs ago. I ask him was it possible that I have herpes in my eyes and said no that I have a problem called fuchs something. I am planning another trip to the eye doctor a different one this time. Just did not like the first one. This time I will go armed with my blood test that says I have genital herpes.

This is how my eyes feel. They are red all the time. Also have small bumps that come and go on my eye lids. They feel like they have boggers in them. Sorry thats the only way I know to explain the gooey feeling. My vision seems like it has a cloud over it. Around my eye swells. The odd thing that does not make since is from what I have read you would have pain. I do not have pain. Just my eyes itch and lids burn.

I am so scared that I will go blind before I can get some help. I have 2 young children That I would like to SEE grow up.

Any advise would be great. What do you all think about my problem? I plan on seeing the eye doctor the first of Feb.

Re: Herpetic Keratitis -- Ouch! need help

I definately think that you are doing the right thing as far as going in. eyes are nothing to play with. I have some tiny tiny bumps that seem to come and go also sometimes they get bigger than usual but they are still very small. I really don't know what boggers are. does it itch and burn uncomfortably I know you saud that you don't have any pain but would you describe it as something unusual that occurs on a regular basis?? Just curious what type or doctor did you go see at first was it an optometrist or optholomogist or someome else and what is the type of specalist that you are gonna see in feb??
