Herpes presents differently in different people, so it could be herpes or something entirely different. or even nothing at all. Even if it is herpes, it could be a recurrent infection that you've carried with little or no symptoms for some time. When you say protected, I assume you mean you use a condom. Condoms aren't that great for preventing herpes. they prevent fluid borne diseases and hsv is contracted from skin-to-skin contact. Since a condom would only cover your penis, it would only protect your penis, not the area you described. You can get tested now and if it comes back negative you can ask for a repeated test 12-16wks after you suspect you were exposed.
