OK, I'm trying to figure out what you mean that you never had an outbreak or a "proper outbreak" but you say you had a swab done. If you didn't have an OB then what did they swab? An OB can be one sore and nothing more...that IS an OB! Just be thankful that is all you've had and it may be all you will ever have. In all actuality, that is the more normal way of herpes than what some of us are having with the one OB after another. It's also very typical to have it bad at first and then the virus kinda burns itself out. The fact of the matter is that many people that have the herpes virus in their bodies have never had an OB and don't even know it. If you happen to pay attention to the Valtex commercials, you will hear them saying that 70% of the people that contract herpes say that the person they got it from was experiencing no symptoms of herpes. That is calls shedding and it's when you are contagious but there is no sore. There is no way of knowing if you are shedding or not!

If you and your partner both have hsv 2 than there's really no reason to worry about spreading it although it is very possible for you to spread it to your face or to her face through oral sex. This happened to my BF, he gave be genital herpes through a genital lesion but he then spread it to his face from oral sex. Just be careful to not have oral sex if there is any sign of a sore or if she feels an OB coming on or if you feel one coming on. Also, it's always a good idea to wash up with soap and water afterwards because there is a chance to spread it to other parts of your body...a small chance but it could happen. This doesn't mean that she/you gave it back to the other person(if you have it you have it) because you can even spread it to yourself by touching an open sore and then touching another part of you body...I believe that this is more likely to happen when the virus is newly introduced to your body. All I can tell you is that my BF has had genital herpes for probably 30 years and after we had oral sex and I was not yet aware that what I had was a herpes OB because I was just at the feeling like a bladder infection stage, he had oral sex with me and right afterwards(a couple days) his whole face around his mouth broke out in sores...he said that he had never had anything like that before happen even though he has had fever blisters his whole life. Since then he always washes his face afterwards with soap and water. Don't use like soft soap because it can burn your skin if your face is sensitive.

If you are going to continue to have sex with others, the right thing to do is always tell them first before you have sex but I don't think that most people actually do the right thing so at the very least always wear a condom. You should wear a condom anyway because there are worse things out there than herpes that you can catch. AIDS is still a threat just because we don't hear about it as much anymore, it's still alive and well! Just because noone has accused you of giving them herpes doesn't mean that you haven't given it to anyone. First of all if they have an OB and they are sexually active, they wouldn't know who they got it from. They may have an OB years later and think their BF(or someone else) gave it to them...that's another thing about herpes, you can actually have it for years without knowing it and then all of a sudden out of the blue you have an OB.
