hi. i know if you have a history of genital herpes then the ob doctor will put you on a valtrex dose every day at around 34-36 weeks until delivery.has anyone had an outbreak at around 20 weeks and taken valtrex then. i just need reasssurance that other people have taken valtrex earlier on in preganancy without sided effects to the baby.my ob nurse said its ok to treat any episodic outbreak during pregnancy.

I have read that doctors will prescribe it closer to the expected delivery date but I personally haven't read anything about taking it earlier on. Are you hoping for a vaginal delivery? Are you considering taking because you are having outbreaks or are you taking it in hopes that you will be outbreak free when your due date comes? I personally would do a ton of research before taking any medication during pregnancy. I would want a complete history and case studies relating to Valtrex and pregnancy. You could check their website and see what they say about taking it during pregnancy but better to error on the side of caution in this case.

Better to be informed - read all that you can. Valtrex has not been around that long. Personally, I would insist on a C-section no matter what my condition on the delivery date.

I have had h-2 for twenty years. I delivered both of my daughters vaginally without being on any meds beforehand or during the deliveries. I got an outbreak the day after my first daughter was born but she was fine. The more you know what your outbreaks look and feel like the better off you are. As long as there is no active outbreak at delivery, vaginal deliver is much preferred over a c-section.
