I went to the doctor yesterday and asked him to switch my Famvir to another anti-viral given I was still having two outbreaks a month while on Famvir. I know I took another antiviral many years ago and after researching it I had figured out it was zovirax (given the shape of the pill I remember taking). He could not find where he had ever prescribed Valtrex for me so he wrote me a prescription for 500mg once a day. When I picked up the prescription and saw those VERY blue pills I knew I had never taken them before (who could forget a color like that!!). I am going to bump up the dosage to 1000 mg once a day. Their website said 500 mg is for people who have 9 or less outbreaks a year and 1000 mg is to be used if you have more than that. So unfortunately it means I only have received enough pills for 15 days but at least that will let me know if it is working. I took only one last night and will take two today. I didn't get any side effects from the dose I took yesterday. Fingers crossed that Valtrex may be the solution to my problem.
