So Frustrated: Don't know when or where and the doctor is no help

I was diagnosed with HSV 2 about a month ago during my annual exam (included in blood test). I was shocked of course, I've never seen symptoms. Now I'm paranoid and think everything is an outbreak. Anyhow, the only thing my doctor could say was, there is no way to narrow down a time frame of when you caught this. She just wanted to give me my prescription for Valtrex and move on to the next patient. I'm so frustrated because I don't have a clue how long I've had this and who gave it to me. I'm 29 years old and have been sexually active since high school. Could I have had this that long? This is the first time that I have been tested for Herpes. I talked to the men that I was with this year and of course no one has it. I'm starting to realize it's a lost cause and I need to accept I have it and will never know when or where, it just makes me so angry. The doctor was so like here is your valtrex prescription for the rest of your life and there is no alternative. Is there anyone else out there with a similar experience?

Re: So Frustrated: Do know when or where and the doctor is no help

If you do not have symptoms of Herpes then I cannot see any reason to take a prescription. I'd keep it handy if you do ever have an OB but to just take a pill and you have no symptoms? I can't see it! It doesn't keep it from spreading so what would be the point in taking Valtrex forever...plus it's probably not real healthy to do that! Just realize that you and millions of others don't/didn't know they have herpes...most will go their entire lives and not ever finding out they have it. I believe that ignorance is bliss!!!!

I have never been tested for herpes 1 or 2 so I don't know for sure which I have...if not both~probably...but my BF gets cold sores often and we kiss all the time and I have never in my entire life gotten a cold sore...assumed that I never got exposed to them back before I dated my BF but now I have to assume that I have had hsv1 all along but I just do not get herpes on my mouth. Every once in a while I'll get an ulcer inside my mouth so maybe for me that's all I get but I never once in my entire life thought I needed to be careful while giving oral sex so as to not give someone herpes! There's a point in there somewhere...HAHAHA!!!! Maybe just ramblings

Re: So Frustrated: Do know when or where and the doctor is no help

I totally understand. I had what I thought was a yeast infection, and the gyn I went to did various tests. He said he thought I had Herpes but he was doing different tests to make sure. I got a call two days later from the nurse telling me that "me and my husband can go celebrate, because the test was negative." I went home to tell my husband the "good news." However, I got another call three days after that, and the nurse told me that I did indeed have herpes. ????? After becoming very upset, and telling her what the other nurse said, she told me "oh, that test was for a yeast infection." Why would I go celebrate with my husband for not having a yeast infection????? I made an appointment with my gyn just to talk to him. I felt the same way you did. When I initially sat down with him, he had the nerve to tell me, "I thought I went over all of this with you last week. Did you have any more questions or something?" I, of course, am switching doctors. I guess I need to wait until I get another outbreak, so he can determine for sure whether or not I have it. At this point, I have accepted having it, but would not be totally suprised if I didn't. My husband and I have been married for five years, and were trying to get pregnant. We always had protected sex up until September. That is when we decided to start trying. Oh well, that's my story.

ohh and do you get buring when you urinate after sex?

and I'm sooo tired, will medication help with that? and my doctor said I need to take the medication with in like a day of a OB but I don't have an RX here to take so I never get down to see the doctor on time. so there is really no point... ohh i just need to know how to control it. I find I do well wen I have on OB to keep it dry and clean down there and it clears up. but all the other symptoms are they also from herpies? tired, dizzy.

Re: So Frustrated: Do know when or where and the doctor is no help

according to my doc, it can be in your system forever, and you never know you have it until you get an outbreak... and there are some ppl who are carriers; who can transfer the virus w/o ever getting an OB, so... yeah that sucks.

my doc also told me that its in my best interest to keep the Rx filled and on hand for when/if an OB occurs- as it's best to take it at the first symptoms...

while i was still in first outbreak-mode, i went to the dr. i got valtrex, and all the info she told me. my symptoms started with a fever... and i felt the same way again (like i was going for round2, without ever finishing round1) so i took the valtrex and i cleared up good and well.

doc also said OB's may occur 1x and never again, or continually. so, i occasionally go through the same feeling of "omg is this another one??!?!" and i panic and wait and wait and nothing, panic then wait.. so i feel you there.

quick summary of all my yammering:
1) there's no real way of ever knowing who gave it to you
2) yes you could have had it since HS
3) drs have lost their bedside manner.

Re: So Frustrated: Do know when or where and the doctor is no help

Sarah, whether you use protection or not herpes can still be passed on. This is one point they are not teaching kids in school nor putting it in the herpes literature. So many people still think the condom guards you against everything. My partner has had herpes type 2 for over 20 years now and has only had 5 o/bs in that time. When i caught mine off him he had just finished with an o/b and had not had one in ten years prior. So it's possible to have herpes and not show o/bs for long periods of time. I wish i was so lucky to not have one in ten years.

If/when you do get another o/b a swab test is even better than a blood test.
My blood test was the specific one to tell if i had it and what type. It came back negative for both types, yet i used to get cold sores on my lip off and on since childhood. It was only later when i had a tiny o/b at my anal area that i thought something unusual was going on. My gp told me to forget about it as it was likely a rash due to sweat!! The sexual health clinic did a swab and it came back positive for type 2.

I've said it before and i'll say it again.....gp's are a waste of time for a lot of things and i agree they have no bedside manner, but that's likely b/c they are worried you will ask them a difficult question which they wont know how to answer. I'd rather a doctor tell me "i don't know" than make up some sort of BS or tell you everything is ok. I wonder where the good doctors go!! or do people only go to med school to later make lots of money?
