I am 63 years old. My husband and I have refrained from sex for over 5 years. Neither of us has had any extramarital contact for over 35 years. I broke out with what appears to be genital herpes recently with painful blisters on the right side of my vagina. The doctor has tested me for herpes which I understand is a sexually transmitted disease. How many years can a disease like this remain dormant. Never had anything remotely like this. Is there a possibility that this could be shingles? These blisters are horribly painful. How long can something like this last?
I'm an emotional and physical basket case.

The virus can remain dormant in someone's system for literally decades before you show a symptom. 30 years is not unheard of.

Shingles generally appears on the chest, back, or face - so this probably isn't shingles.

Herpes blisters can last anywhere from 3 - 10 days. Initial outbreaks can last longer. If your doctor prescribed medication, it will likely reduce the length of time.

But, did your test come back positive for herpes?? Considering your situation, it does seem unlikely...
