Vaccine made CNN today - Herpes Message Board

I just saw news of the Herpes Vaccine on the news ticker on CNN. Reported that trials showed vaccine was effective in preventing infection in 74% of women, but did nothing at all for men. If true, this is still good news. Also reported that vaccine could be available in about five years.

Yes, this announcement has been expected for a while. Unfortunately it only works for women, and only for women who do not already have either HSV-1 or HSV-2 before receiving the vaccine, and only about 70% of those women. Since an estimated 50-80% of people have HSV-1 (usually caught in childhood), it won't be a huge slice of the general population who will be able to benefit from the vaccine. But every little bit helps--it's good news for them and their partners.

Hi 1 in 4. I always check the Herpes boards because my sister has had genital and oral herpes for about a year now. It is always nice to see your supportive posts. I have HPV--but not warts. Only the kind that causes cell changes on my cervix. It has been very difficult becase I cannot get health insurance. But my sister and I share this bond so we help each other together. Keep it up and thanks for being around!

Did you hear the announcement just the other day that a vaccine for certain strains of HPV is around the corner? It has proven 100% effective so far and they expect it will be available in about 5 years to the general public. But it only works for certain types apparently, that can cause cancer of the cervix.

That's sad about not being able to get health insurance because of your diagnosis. You should move to Canada.

(We have socialised health insurance here.) But seriously, it must be very frightening to know that you're completely on your own in terms of health costs, which can be prohibitive in serious cases.

Good luck to you and your sister. You're lucky to have each other.

Can't you lie to the insurance company? I mean how would they know it was a preexisting condition unless you tell them?

Also the vaccine I was under the impression is to be given to girls around 10-12 whom DON'T already have it.

I could be wrong on this and would like to hear from you back about it?
