I believe the chances of a false positive for a swab culture are almost impossible. Unfortunately it might be too late now to retest that particular spot with any accuracy. If you do have it, the test is likely to bring back a false negative result. You could try a blood test though, which will tell you if you have type 1 or 2 even withoug an OB present. Did you test positive for type 2? You could try the POCkit test which tests exclusively for type 2 and is inexpensive, gives fast results and is not bad in terms of accuracy.
You should know, though, that most people who have genital herpes don't realise it because they don't get symptoms they recognise as being herpes (or none at all). So it's very possible you've had this for a while without knowing it.
The other thing you should know is that a condom will not always protect you from getting herpes. Condoms will protect from anything contained in sperm but herpes is spread through skin-to-skin contact. So if the person has an OB site outside the condom-covered area, you will be exposed to it even when using a condom.
So it's possible you've had it without realising it. But if you want to find for sure, get the blood test. At least then you'll know what you're dealing with.
