Hello,
I recently became involved with a partner that has HSV1. She only has it on her mouth. She gets outbreaks approximately 2 times/year. Currently we live 750 miles apart. But when we are able to get together I need to know what precautions to take. I read the HSV2 can be spread when it is not active.

How prevalent is the risk of my infection when she does not have a cold sore, either from kissing or her performing oral sex on me?

Do I have to have an outbreak to be contageous to others (mostly I am concerned about kissing my 3 yr old, or her getting something off of my towel, lip balm etc...)?

As her last trip was very stressful, and she started her period, she had a pretty serious outbreak the day she left. I understand that she was shedding the virus probably a lot. Is there any way to determine whether I have been already infected. I am aware 80% of us already carry the virus, just that a small proportion show symptoms.

Hi:

Some people experience what is called invisible outbreaks. Not always herpes shows itself the same way. If you and your friend are serious and you really want to get involve with her, she can considere a suppression therapy with Valtrex or Fambir, which can be taken safely once a day for a year. At least in that time the possibilities of an outbreak are very very limited, so you can be more calm. But I really recomend you to learn more about the virus. There are many places in the web where you can find reliable information before you make any serious decision. But remember this should be a very sensitive theme for your friend, so please be gentle.
