Just plain news: I'd been on Valtrex, 500 mg/day, for eight months without an OB. Since the meds are pretty expensive, I thought I'd experiment with taking 1/2 a pill each day, just to see if it worked. It didn't. Within one month of my experiment, I'm having an OB. Ok, no big, at least now I know.

Good news: Again, experimenting with my meds, I tried to make a topical medication for myself. I crushed half a Valtrex into powder, mixed it with some DMSO cream AND some Renova (wrinkle cream, known to penetrate the skin). I applied the medication last night, first day of the OB, and this morning the sores were almost completely healed. I can barely even feel them, and when I touched each sore with rubbing alcohol this morning, could juuuuuust barely feel a tingle.

Update -- sores were completely gone 48 hours after beginning the topical medication.

I'd used a lysine cream in the past, and usually required 5-7 days to heal completely. But this little home-made mix healed the sores in about half the time, only two days from OB to gone.

Huh! That's really interesting, Sunless. I imagine it would work much the same as Zovirax (acyclovir) cream. I wonder if the Valtrex works like that only because of the acyclovir drug in it, or if its ability to sustain higher levels of the drug in the bloodstream is an additional factor. It would be interesting to try Zovirax cream and see if it has similar effects. Or try plain generic Acyclovir in the same way and see how that works. Thanks for sharing your results with us. ...Just please be careful with the DMSO.
