It can be spread by non-sexual contact, depending on where the other person has it and what you were doing to get it. Cold sores are often transmittered via non-sexual kissing, and dentists would often get it on their hands back before they used gloves. But, it should take several days to a week for it to show up, though some people get the disease but never have singificant symptoms.
