how long can herpes stay dormant?

i had protected sex with a girl approximately five years ago and recently found out she had herpes at the time of intercourse, i have shown no signs of herpes and neither has my current girlfriend of 2. i am wondering if it possible for herpes to stay dormant that long and how often it does if it can?

Re: how long can herpes stay dormant?

It effects each person differently. Some people have had it for years and never noticed anything weird. Then they got tested and found out they have it.
Since you had sex with this person who has herpes you and your new girlfriend should get tested. Ask your doctor or std clinic to run the "HerpeSelect type specific IgG blood test". Do not let them run the IgM test. Tell they you refuse to pay for that test as it is not a proper test for herpes.
You are probably fine but why not find out your HSV status.
