For most people the initial outbreak can be the worst. But some people experience very mild symptoms and pass it off as just an UTI, yeast infection or jock itch. Best bet is to get to your doctor and get a swab culture done of the sores. If they are healed too much, the test could come out negative because there is not enough 'fresh' virus in the lesion.
Unfortunately, a herpes test is not part of a standard panel of STD testing. Check with whomever did the tests. Look for something referring to HSV1 or HSV2. If you were not tested you have to specifically ask for it.
