First Time Outbreak Question

I've been dating a girl who revealed to me that she had Herpes up front and I made the decision to continue dating her and have a sexual relationship. She has not had anything close to an outbreak while we have been dating but I still contracted herpes (not what this question is about, but wanted to post that I am an example of that situation being possible).

I went to the doctor a day after first noticing a small bump, by the time i saw the doctor there were 5 total blisters in 5 separate locations. The outbreak was not painful or itchy in anyway. I was prescribed a large dose of Valtrex that lasted 10 days and was very expensive. Instead, I took my girlfriend's prescription which she was prescribed for her first outbreak (she also had a minor first outbreak) that was a lesser dosage that lasted 3 days.

After the 3 days were up I could see scabs on the spots where the outbreak was and it hadn't gotten any worse. I figured the outbreak was in remission and my gf and I had sex. The next day i noticed a few more bumps around the original spots but didn't pay any attention. The day after that (2 days after I had sex with my gf) the outbreak was terrible - each of the 5 locations had a ton of blisters (too many to count). I immediately filled my original prescription (the higher Valtrex dosage and longer duration) and have been taking it since.

The outbreak after we had sex was very itchy and very bad (like pictures from text books). The worst of it resided after 2 days of taking the Valtrex. I am now 5 days into the prescription and all the spots are scabbed over.

Sorry for the long story but I wanted to state all the facts.

First, the night before my original outbreak my gf and I had vigorous sex for over an hour. Is it possible that I already had herpes from her or previous sexual encounters and the vigourous sex caused it to flare up? I have never had sex like that before and find it odd that it became first noticable the next morning.

Second, did the sex my gf and I had when the initial outbreak was in remission cause the dramatic flare up? Or, was the lesser prescription of Valtrex not enough and I just got the outbreak I would have originally had, had I not taken anything?

Finally, I've read that sex causes some people to have outbreaks (reason for initial question). I noticed the first outbreak after my gf and I had vigorous sex (twice in one night), the flare up when the first outbreak was in remission came after we had sex again twice in one night (not nearly as vigorous or long though). Is it possible that sex is the cause for me having outbreaks and if so, is this going to be the case for me for the rest of my life?

Thank you and I appreciate any comments.

Re: First Time Outbreak Question

Sorry one more question...

Does a really bad first outbreak mean that recurrences will also be bad? I am a very healthy 24 year old. I am rarely sick, regularly work out, and eat very healthy. I am very concerned that since my first outbreak was so bad that I will be experiencing frequent recurrences that are also very bad.

Re: First Time Outbreak Question

They get better not all outbreaks the same. If your immune system is strong you have a better chance controlling outbreaks by staying healthy and stress free. Usually the first one is the worst. Have you and your girlfriend thought about going on valtrex everyday( long term therapy) ? I chose to do it and its the best thing i done. I was diagnosed in 4/08 with hsv1 and hsv2 that i got from a cheating partner he never told me he had it i found out by having my first outbreak and my outbreaks were horrible. Valtrex does help alot.
