You're not alone in not knowing a lot about herpes. There isn't a lot of public education anymore, unfortunately.
Sorry but I can't assure you it's not herpes. If you have ever had cold sores or fever blisters (a form of herpes), it is possible to transfer that to your genitals. If you touch your mouth while you're having an outbreak (or in the few days before it) and then touch your genitals right away, you could have exposed your genitals to herpes that way. If there was even the slightest break in the skin (like from a rash, yeast infection, shaving, scratching, etc.) then the herpes could have taken hold in the genital area that way.
It could also be a lot of other things too, though. The only way you'll know for sure is to see a doctor ASAP. That way s/he can run some tests before it clears up too much to tell what it is.
