I have genital herpes and am on valtrex medication - two tablets daily.
My partner is not, will be prescribed medication soon, but unfortunately has now been infected.
I believe we are passing it back and forth to each other from evidence of constant outbreaks and our inability to take it seriously and leave each other alone. This however will change today! When I mention sexual contact I also mean oral sex.
I have 3 questions.
1. How long should we abstain from sex when one of us has an outbreak?
2. How long after sexual contact, with an active herpes, will it stay on the fingers and mouth areas? Will this be transferred to his child's face through a kiss, her body through his or my hands and even genital area if he takes her to the toilet etc...
4. Someone mentioned on yahoo that it can cause aids when 2 people keep reinfecting each other. I don't believe this to be accurate at all but wow, it has me spooked! Is it true?

Just make sure hands are washed after touching the infected area and all will be ok

Is it true? No, this is not true, they say having this could increase the risk of getting AIDS/HIV but this is because of the open sores and what not. In general it wouldn't just appear out of nowhere.
Thank you so much for your help

I'm really glad you replied as I had noticed your responses to other questions as well. Thanks for your reply. Just to clarify my question at point 2.
My partner has a 3 year old child. In my worst fears, I'm imagining the virus being passed on to her if he or I kiss or cuddle her after my partner and I have had sex - during an outbreak - and we haven't washed etc. Can it be passed for example to her face or body? Or can it be passed to her genital area if he takes her to the toilet etc?
I'm so worried about this as I know we have had sex during an outbreak and probably haven't washed hands etc.
Hey there The virus doesn't live for very long outside of the body, so even if you touched the infected area and didn't wash up right away but kiss/cuddled his daughter maybe 5-10 mins later I would think the chances would be very low, slim to none to be honest. I also believe that strongly since the way it is passed is from skin to skin contact with the infected area (has to be rubbing). I hope that makes sense
Since this is a main concern I suggest that you just ensure that your/his hands and face/mouth (if you partake in oral) are washed before kissing/cuddling or taking his daughter to the bathroom just to be on the safe side.
