For someone dealing with a brand new diagnosis, this find was a godsend. I'm a 25 year old female having my first outbreak (OBGYN swabbed, but told me he knew it was herpes), and I am in A LOT of pain. I was wondering about home treatments to relive the burning and discomfort? My Dr. Was absolutely awful today. He basically gave me his judgmental eyes, made me feel like a leper, prescribed Valtrex and lortab (after I had to BEG for pain medication) and sent me on my way. After reading some threads here I found out about the Epsom salt soaks and cold hair dryer after bathing. This was AMAZING. I was hoping there were some alternative home remedies (or anything really) you guys could share with me. I would really appreciate any and all feedback. I'm having an incredibly hard time with this diagnosis and would really love to talk with anyone who will listen. Thanks in advance.

Hi there,
For some doctors its not a big deal and it is a shame the way they treat their patients. If you are still having burning while urinating you can try using a spray bottle with water and as you are peeing spray to alleviate the sting. Also oatmeal baths can help, and no tight clothes or panties. If you need to wear panties make sure they are cotton and at night try not wearing any and a long tshirt or night gown to try and keep the area dry. If you can do the same during the day too it may help.

Some people also take an over the counter supplement called L-Lysine it can be found in the vitamin section of your store.

As for just finding out, it does take a toll on us emotionally for sure and that I think is the hardest part because in the grand scheme of things it is just a pesky skin condition. Keep in mind this does not change you at all, you are still the same person you were before being diagnosed.

One more tip keep your stress levels down and your immune system up

I, too, was recently diagnosed...and am having a difficult time with the diagnosis. Pharmacists are not that kind either when picking up meds for this. Got the wonderful little smirk and giggle when I had a few questions. Made me want to tell him that one of his gender gave this to me and neglected to tell me that he had it! See if I ever ask the help behind the counter any questions again. Not likely!

Hi so sorry to hear your GP treated you like that, when I was diagnosed I got written a sick note for work by a judgemental GP saying exactly what I had on it, I felt devastated and eventually got an appointment with my own GP and explained my situation and she screwed up the sick note and wrote me one for 17 days for abdominal pain/investigation, and she was absolutely lovely giving me aqueous cream as a soap substitute, eye ointment as it has affected my eyes, now all I need to do for 10 days now is relax!!!
I initially went to the clinic (gum clinic) to be looked at and have been there twice in last 10 days, you don't pay for medication there either, look it up on google to find your nearest clinic, good luck know it's really painful I am still getting knife pains down there I finish my 7 day treatment of aciclovir today, going back to clinic on tuesday to see if I need any more treatment...
I hope you will find someone to confide in a friend,sister or mum....
