Oral herpes... again for the first time?
I occasionally get a cold sore inside my mouth at the same spot on the bottom right bony ridge behind my lower right molars. When particularly bad, the pain shoots up along a nerve to the right side of my skull and down my right shoulder. The pain usually resolves within a few days and often comes about initially due to heightened stress.
Now, for the first time, it is happening in the same spot but on the left side. And it is MUCH more intense than anything I've remembered on the (initial) right side. Now, pain is shooting up several nerves covering a larger area of my skull up to the crown of my head. And the pain was shooting down and making my left upper back sore (that appears to have waned to a large degree).
Does the herpes virus migrate like this? Could it be a new infection? And regardless of that, when a cold sore hits a new spot for the first time, does it act like a "first time infection," that is, significantly more intense than future outbreaks? I'm trying to explain to myself what's going on as the pain is greater than normal (and in a new spot).
