HSV1 or HSV2 Does it matter?

25 yrs ago I was told I had herpes. It was at the emergency room of the hospital because the pain to my genitals was unbareable to say the least I could not wait to see my doctor. I was told by the nurse that it was herpes and sent home. All she said was, I feel sorry for you. I got it from a BF at the time who was cheating on me. There was no literature, no internet and nobody to talk to. There is so much more information now.

I kept this a secret from everyone. To make a long story short, because of the shame in getting this I never had a serious relationship or children or enjoyed life. It was always on the back of my mind. I'm past all that now and don't linger about it as much until an OB occurs.

I controlled my OB's the best I could with what I could find that works. They do get worse with stress, alcohol and lack of sleep. The years have not helped reduce them for me.

I was never tested with a blood test. I don't think she even did a swab. I don't remember her asking to do this.

I am working on improving my health to reduce the OB's because there is a new man in my life. I have told him and he is ok with all of this. We have not had sex yet.

My question is, I'm trying to understand what it means for me to find out if it's HSV1 or HSV2. It's genitally and years ago I was told if it's on the genitals it's HSV2. I read here on the forum that is not the case. I have never had a cold sore in my life.

What does it mean for me to find out if it's one or the other? How can this help me to know? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Re: HSV1 or HSV2 Does it matter?

Hello,
Good for you that you are not letting it hold you back!

As for finding out the type, it is good to know because if your partner has the same type as you then the chances of them getting it in another location the opposite place of which they have are very slim where as if both have different types chances are still low but always a chance of them/you getting it in the opposite place.

Honestly though I mean these days some people have been diagnosed with the same type in both places so its not a HUGE deal but just good to know for the above stated reason.
