Are doctors mis-informed?

Are doctors mis-informed?
I just recently contracted HSV2 a few weeks ago. I had a doc appointment today and we discussed the risk of transmission. He literally told me that it was ok to have sex as long as I'm not having an outbreak. My reaction was "Sweet!", but deep down, I know that this is not true. His comment contradicts a lot of the research I have done. Is there any truth behind what he said? Or is he behind the times? He looks to be in his 60's. Maybe he needs to catch up on some recent Herpes studies? I didn't say anything because I didn't want to offend him.

Re: Are doctors mis-informed?

Not having an outbreak lessens the chances of passing it on but there is always a risk. You said you have done your research so you may have found that the virus "shed's" (forgot what the medical term is for it) and may also be contigious at that time as well. Some people only have one outbreak and then don't show any signs or symptoms but still have passed it on to partners (I have had this happen to friends of mine). So despite what the doctor said, still take safety measures for you and your partner.
