Almonds are NOT ALLOWED in moderation, only in copious quantities.
I can't have them around because I INHALE them, $5 worth per snort and 827 calories per cupful!
Cashews go even faster!
Almonds give you a pretty decent distribution of fats mostly monosaturates... but the total fats are very high-79% of calories.
A nice snack if you an restrict yourself to an ounce serving....HAH!
However, I wouldn't count on almonds for improving serum lipids to any appreciable degree.
I eat a hand full of almonds every day with my yogurt for my midmorning snack don't know if it's helping I am still on Zetia..I think I am opt to try the natural way. I will stop the zetia a month before my next bloodtest just to see if it helpe. I have try that lecithin..Lisa
I eat almonds, walnuts, raisins, dates, hazelnuts every day (my favorite snacks), my cholesterol was 231 in April, now it's 227. I think drinking green, black teas and eating properly (not doing any of the stupid diets) help me reduce my cholesterol. But it's getting down very slowly. I guess in my case a lack of exercize is responsible for that.
Honey is good too, 3-4 spoons honey stirred in a cup of water lowers cholesterol. It's good to drink on an empty stomack. Garlic is the best, it's good to eat garlic a few times a week. My friend has eaten alot of oat (cereal, oatmeal) and her cholesterol went down rapidly from 190 to 168.
I eat oats, lentils, beans, peas, which are high in fiber, green veggetables, fruits every day, salmon once a week, garlic sometimes, but my LDL is still higher than HDL.
Today I started drinking oolong tea. I also bought treadmill and gonna work on it every day.
Read somewhere that almonds (in moderation) improve certain cholesterol #'s. Do people eat any?
The "World's Healthiest Food's" website has an excellent write-up on almonds.
They are not only an excellent source of biotin & Vitamin E, they also contain tryptophan, magnesium, vit B12 [riboflavin], manganese, phosphorus, dietary fiber, copper and protein. 1/4 cup is 205 calories.
Almonds are high in monounsaturated fats, the same type of health-promoting fats that are found in olive oil. Biotin, a B-vitamin, is involved in the metabolism of both sugar and fat. Vitamin E is an anti-oxidant. Magnesium is Nature's own calcium channel blocker. Potassium, an important electrolyte involved in nerve transmission and the contraction of all muscles including the heart, is another mineral that is essential for maintaining normal blood pressure and heart function. When we deprive ourselves of nutritional foods that are high in fat, we are missing out on a lot of other healthy and vital nutrients. So enjoy your 1/4 cup of almonds a day.
I always choose the hershey bar with almonds in it. ;=}
Seriously, almonds (walnuts, too) do provide health benefits as many have attested to. I'm not so sure about the milk chocolate part of the candy bar. Dark chocolate is better (and better for us), relatively speaking.

1 oz of a "very special" chocolate packs more than twice the healthy antioxidant punch of red wine or other dark chocolates.
Look for the ingredient "Cocoapro cocoa".
Cocoa is rich in antioxidant flavonoids called flavanols, which include procyanidins, epicatechins, and catechins.
People who eat a diet rich in cocoa powder and dark chocolate have lower oxidation levels of bad LDL cholesterol, higher blood antioxidant levels, and 4% higher levels of good HDL cholesterol.
