Confused!!!!

I just read the poost on how Cholestrol is calcuated but still am in the dark.

I just had my blood work done.

Total cholestrol-202
Hdl-50
Ldl-155
Vldl-21
Triglerides-104

I was under the impression they added all three cholestrol levels together, but the last four tests prove me wrong. I did not receive a risk factor.

Could someone help me out.

My homoscytine level was elevated to 16 and the Dr. put me on Foltex over a year ago. My hs-Crp is 4.2 and has always been negative in the past. The Dr. is not worried about the Crp because of the chol. rates, but did tell I would have to stay on foltex the rest of my life or my homoscytine level will go bask up.

Thanks, Linda

Re: Confused!!!!

TOTAL=LDL+HDL+TRIG/5. Your #s don't quite work out, since 50+155+104/5=226 (vs your 202). Usually the LDL is CALCULATED from the direct measurments of the others...using the formula LDL=TOTAL-HDL-TRIGS/5. In your case the LDL should be 202-50-104/4..which comes out LDL of 131, instead of 155. 131 is considered the upper range of NORMAL, whereas 155 is elevated.

Re: Confused!!!!

Yeah Linda, Rahod is right.

Recheck those numbers. If they are what you reported, call your doctor and tell him the lab screwed up.

Homocysteine and CrP are markers for inflammation in generral and arterial inflammation in particular. The Foltex seems to be a multivitamin, which I presume from the name is high in Folic Acid. If your homocysteine is showing 16 WITH the foltex, then you need to take more folic acid (over a milligram...perhaps 2 or more.)

Your CrP is extraordinarily high if measured in mg/dL...should be .8 max by some standards, 1.0 by others (mine is .1)
Were you suffering from any infection when blood was drawn (cold, flu?). Make sure you retest whenever you see you doc, that high CrP is indicative of more than just "your cholesterol." A reading over 4.0 represents a quadrupling of your heart attack risk.

Re: Confused!!!!

So you divide 5 into the trig. add the LDL, the HDl and that numbers together to come up with your total chol. I just rechecked the totals for the last three years and all are wrong, my total would be higher than what they say. My husband's are the same way.

The hospital I go to has the limits of 130-159 being borderline high for the LDL.Total Chol. of 200- 239 borderline high.

Thanks for the help, I am going to call the lab tomorrow and see how this calculated. Something is wrong and you would not think it would be a mistake for both of us for 3 years.

The Crp rates, average 1.0-3.0 mine was 4.2. My allergies are very bad and were when I had the test done, lots of pnd.My homcystine was that high before the folic acid now is fine.

Foltx has 2.5 MGs,Folic acid, 25 Mgs, B-6 and 2 mgs B-!2

Linda
