Vytorin knocked the daylights out of my cholesterol !

About 1 month ago the doc put me on Vytorin 10/20Mg. It has now been 30 days or more and I just recieved my Cardiocheck and I LOVE this machine. Worth every single penny.
Anyway, I will be in the docs office this Tuesday to pick up my actual numbers fromthe lab before the vytorin which I think were:

Total Cholesterol--273
LDL--203
HDL--Not sure
Tryglycerides--Not sure but must have been good as he never mentioned it.

After a little over 30 days on Vytorin my tests on the Cardiopcheck were:

Total Cholesterol--115
LDL--HAVE to calculate but not sure how to {trying to call company}
HDL--45
Tryglycerides--96

I am pleased with all of the above and my LDL must be quit low as well. Once I figure out how to calculate it I will post it [or maybe some of you know?]. Anyway, I might be getting just a wee bit to much of Vytorin and might cut my pill in half.
Any advice?

If any of you get the Cardiocheck you will love it. I love the cappilary tubes as they make collecting the blood sample and applying so much easier
Nice machine, really nice.

Re: Vytorin knocked the daylights out of my cholesterol !

LDL should be 51--great ratio of HDL/LDL and HDL/Total

The Friedwald equation is used to approximate the LDL based on the "average" composition of VLDL (carrier of TG and cholesteryl ester) in most people works out to be ~ 5 mg/dL triglyceride per mg/dL VLDL carrier. As the TG concentration is increased in the plasma, the approximation is less accurate and the cutoff used is 400 mg/dL where the LDL concentration cannot be estimated with a specified accuracy level (offhand, I don't know what that level is).

Your total lipids are the sum of [VLDL]+[LDL]+[HDL], and [VLDL]=[TG/5].

So the the Friedwald eqn is used to calc LDL by LDL = Total - HDL - TG/5
Rearranged that is : Total = LDL + HDL + TG/5.

Many people will assume incorrectly that this equation is some kind of "chemical law" of how the body lipids distribute (like LeChatelier's principle), and that you can perturb one variable independently of others and effect some change. The equation is only valid within specific lipid concentration ranges and even then, the values are approximations with some inherent error.

Re: Vytorin knocked the daylights out of my cholesterol !

What did you pay for the machine Stumper, did any test strips come with that price?
Will your doctor confirm your numbers AFTER Vitorin on that next visit. It will be interesting how these compare with the Cardio-Chek numbers.

Why not test the morning you go see the doctor...then you KNOW you're comparing appples to apples.

GREAT numbers, but I'm a bit of a skeptic on that 51 LDL...that's AWFULLY, AWFULLY good, perhaps TOO good...even if Vitorin IS a powerful combination.

Great going stumper. Glad to see things are doing so well and the meds. agree with you. Never heard of that machine, hopefully it compares well to your drs.

Lenin,

Yes, for $214.00 which was total including shipping which was free, I recieved a "package" deal. I recieved cardiocheck, a box of 6 cholesterol trips, a box of 6 HDL strips, 25 capilary tubes, 6 glucose strips. THEN I ordered separately 6 triglyceride strips.

Now, as to the doctors numbers , when I called a week ago and requested a cholesterol lab work the nurse told me that the doc did not have me scheduled for that right now, so my guess is that when I go in Tuesday, show him my results he will then send me for lab work and another visit , at which, I will tell him "Scianoro"(sp?) . I see no need for another checkup, at least not immediately for at least 6 months. That is why I got the Cardiocheck.

I know what you mean by the low LDL. I got ahold of Cardiocheck and they told me how to calculate and then told me numbers were excellent. She asked me if I have done any physical work lately and I have done quite a bit lately, working out on the oil and gas wells with all the nice weather. She said that could be a factor as well.

nontheless, I am happy

Lenin, if you could scrape together a few bucks this thing is indeed nice, you would like it.
