Has anyone tried the new orange juice with plant sterols that claims it lowers cholesterol? My friend who takes statins told me she started drinking the new orange juice and also started using the "no trans fats" margarine and she has lowered her cholesterol enough to decrease her statin dose by half. Now for me to say I am eating margarine is even a shock to me, but I did buy the H.... Wise one and it doesn't taste bad but when you use it on hot toast it seems to make the toast rather wet. The orange juice is very good. I guess I decided to try the juice because I don't want another pill to take and to drink juice with my meal is nice. Let us know if you have tried any of these and what results you get.

What is suppose to be in the OJ to make it lower your cholesterol? I swear, everytime I turn on tv I see a new ad for something that will lower it. Isn't OJ rather high in sugar, as I was told not to let hubby have much due to him being a type 2 diabetic?...........

Hubby got a news letter today, as we do evey month from the AARP, and they had a nice article in their regarding plant sterols. One thing they did say, as I have often said, is we should almost double our intake of veggies and fruits, as our soil has been so contaminated, we need extra. Of course with the prices of the stuff, we might have to rob a bank to afford all we should eat....

My girlfriend uses that new margarine, think it begins with a B, she said it isn't too bad at all. I've also seen the price of that stuff..WHOA!! Geez, they want us to eat all this good stuff, but God forbid they should make it affordable. I really like Wendy's salads and fruit platter, and for a lil over 4.00, U can't buy the stuff in the store and make one for that price.

Those two (Benecol and Take Charge?) are sterol based margerines (sitosterol) and to my way of thinking are priced WAY out of line. I would pay $2...but I WON'T pay $6.

Give a look for something called SMART BEAT (not SMART BALANCE.) It costs as much as regular margerine but has NO saturated fats, NO trans-fats and only 20 calories per Tbsp. (as opposed to 80-100 for most other spreads.) It's major component are water and canola oil and that contributes a nice amount of Omega-3 oils in the form of ALA. The low calore count allows the eating of "butter" even on a strict diet.

It tastes rather nice too and comes in 2 - 8 ounce tubs for anywhere from $.99 to $1.49...usually $1.29.

Gardeningal...what do they charge for that Orange Juice and do you know how much sitosterol you get?

Lenin: The orange juice is M.....Maid, Heart Wise, not sure if I can name brands, it is in a 1/2 gal container and says it is 1gram per serving, which is an 8oz glass.It says to have 2 servings a day. Here in Minn. it cost me a little over $2. much like buying milk. I did get the Smart Balance and here it Cub Stores it cost $2.50 a tub. Will look for the brand you mentioned and see how much cheaper it is.

Sure you can name brands as long as you aren't SELLING it. You don't own an orange grove do you?

Gee, I just saw the Smart Blance at HALF of what you paid!

I'll scout the Minute Made but at first glance that seems like a lot of calories (a pint of OJ) just to get a gram of sterols, dosage to get a modest amount of cholesterol lowering seems around 2 grams a day or so.
