HubbleRules, about niacin

Hubble: I read that you began taking niacin a few days ago and thought you might like to hear what I read recently. I see that you had a slight reaction to it and the vit C you take may help you with that. Doctor Abram Hoffer pioneered high dose niacin therapy back in the 1950's and he repeatedly published his observations that a gram-sized dose of Vit C greatly improves a patient's niacin tolerance. He even recommended increasing the Vit C as you increase the niacin dose. Here also is something interesting, Research at the U of Mich. Medical School has shown that Vit C protects the liver itself, and doses of 5,000 mg a day appears to actually flush fats from the liver. While you are on niacin be sure you also take a high dose B-complex because B vitamins need each other to work properly, like one doctor said "Would you pay for a tune up for your car and change only one spark plug?" I am taking the niacin, Inositol Hexaniancinate as you are and I won't know how it is working for a few months but I have no reaction so far and I'm half way through the bottle. I am taking 320mg dose and am going to double it soon. I will be having liver tests to satisfy my own mind, even though all I read say that this form of niacin is safer then the time release type. Thought this might be of interest to you. Vit C is often used to help people with allergies and so may help your reaction. Gardeninggal

Re: HubbleRules, about niacin

GardeningGal,

Thanks for the feedback...

I do take about 5000mg of Vitamin-C a day - and I have noticed my allergies are less bothersome this year than they normally were. Maybe it's mental, but then again, maybe the C is helping there.

I've been taking my Niacin (IH) at night without vitamin-c - I didn't know the 2 worked together. I'll start taking a vitamin-c with my Niacin from here on out..

One thing I've done lately that seems to help is I've cut way back on wheat or wheat products. I had been having intestinal problems and since I cut back on the wheat, most of it has gone away... I think I may have a Gluten intolerance - I'm still avoiding then adding back things to be sure.

Hubble,

I think I mentioned Dr. Hoffer to you on a previous post. One thing he mentioned was to match the vitamin c dosage to the niacin. ex 3,000 mg a day of niacin and 3,000 mg of vitamin C. With this daily dosage he's seen a dramatic decrease in all cause mortality. Though he does mention that everyone's niacin limit is a bit different. This is a quote from Hoffer:

"A few patients have low thresholds for nicotinamide and nicotinic acid," Dr. Hoffer added. "Nausea may set in with either. They will require smaller doses of both to achieve an adequate vitamin B3 intake. There is a wide range between patients for the optimum dose, and alteration of dosage may be needed as treatment continues. One of my chronic female patients who is schizophrenic required 30 grams per day for a year. On 24 grams her symptoms came back. For the past seven years, however, a gradually reduced dosage to 3 grams has been adequate." "

Re: HubbleRules, about niacin

Gardeninggal,

You know, there may actually be some truth to what you just said about vitamin C minimizing the flushing effect of niacin. I've noticed that when I take my last dose of niacin in the evening on an empty stomach, I usually take it with a glass of water with 2000mg vitamin C dissolved in it. When I do this, I rarely notice any flushing effect. Now, if I take it with plain water on an empty stomach, then I usually will experience some flushing effect.
